This, I’ve NEVER seen before 🤯 While watching elephants on my recent safari to Mana Pools in Zimbabwe, a young new-born elephant calf slipped into thick muddy water. The mother immediately reacted & tried to free her calf from the mud, gently trying to pull it free. She figured this could harm her calf as the mud was likely pinning it down. So, she had to be creative. She climbed into the thick mud & started guiding her calf to a part of the waterhole that’s more shallow, and contained less thick, sticky mud. What followed I’ve never seen before! She kept using her tail to touch the calf. This was clearly done on purpose & with intent. It likely reassure the stressed elephant calf, and probably guided it to some extent. But I think importantly, it helped the mother keep track of exactly where her calf was at all times, making sure the little one was not left behind. Unbelievable! Elephants are obviously very smart, but this was awareness I’ve not yet seen from them. Have you ever seen something like this? Once they got to shallower water the mother elephant showed signs of being more relaxed & after 4 minutes, the baby elephant was out of danger. Incredible to watch this, to see this first-hand. It’s something my guests will never forget!
