Melanin is a natural pigment which protects our cells and DNA. When our skin is exposed to uv rays our cells produce melanin to protect our skin, this is why we get a tan. However if we don't use sun block then our cells produce melanin at a much faster rate which then causes skin damage and burning.
Use sun cream and allow your cells to continue its natural cycle....you will still tan with an spf on and it will even last longer as your skin isn't damaged.
