The funniest salon jokes usually come from past experiences…
(The ones we’ve finally got over and can now laugh about)

Every quote in this series will probably feel familiar if you’re a hair extensionist.

But behind the humour is something we genuinely believe in.

✔️Honest advice.

✔️Transparent guarantees.

✔️Products that do exactly what they promise.

That’s the standard we hold ourselves to at Routes Hair Extensions.

We suspect you’re sitting on hundreds, sometimes thousands, of photos and videos you’ve collected over the years.

Client transformations.

Before and afters.

Testimonials.

Maintenance appointments.

Colour changes.

Hair videos.

The problem is that most of it never gets used properly.

It gets buried.

Lost amongst screenshots, holiday photos, memes, shopping receipts and everything else living in your camera roll.

And even when you find it again, you’re often left wondering:

“What do I actually post with this?”

“What’s the angle?”

“What do I even say?”

That’s exactly why we’ve included a section inside this month’s Hair Extensionist’s Guide on building an Autumn Transformation Gallery, organising your content properly and getting more value from the photos, videos and testimonials you already have.

Because some of your best marketing assets may already be sitting in your camera roll.

You just haven’t used them properly yet.

You colour match the extensions perfectly. You fit them. Then suddenly the blonde looks slightly warmer, darker or just… off.

It doesn’t necessarily mean the colour match was wrong.

What you need to know

Blonde is particularly sensitive to its surroundings because lighter hair reflects more of what is happening around it.

▪️Clothing matters. A bright white cape, black clothing or a strongly coloured top can change how your eye reads the blonde.

▪️Salon lighting matters even more. Warm bulbs can make neutral blondes appear golden, while very cool LEDs can flatten warmth and make creamy shades look ashier than they really are.

▪️The client’s natural hair underneath affects the finished result. You’re rarely viewing an extension shade in isolation once it is fitted.

▪️Wet hair is misleading. Saturated hair absorbs and reflects light differently, so judging your final blend before everything is completely dry can send you chasing a problem that isn’t actually there.

▪️Cameras add another variable. Automatic white balance can make a blonde photograph quite differently from how it looks in front of you.

Why it matters

Colour matching isn’t simply finding the closest shade on a ring.

It’s judging how several colours will behave together once they’re distributed throughout the client’s hair, in real-world lighting.

That’s why experienced colour matching often involves more than one blonde rather than trying to find one supposedly perfect shade.

Before changing a colour match you’re unsure about, check it dry in natural daylight and move the hair through several positions.

Sometimes the shade isn’t wrong. The environment is.

📌 Save this for the next blonde that has you second-guessing yourself.

A blunt natural baseline with a multi-tonal finish.

Nicola used 20–22” MVP Nanos to add length and fullness while keeping that gorgeous natural dimension running throughout.

The result? Full, balanced ends, a seamless blend and a finish that looks like it belongs.

❤️ Like this if you love a multi-tonal blend.

One shade doesn’t always tell the whole story.

This is Shade #530 Merlot

Across the Routes ranges, you’ll find almost 100 shades to choose from, including:

🤍 Icy blondes
🤎 Rich brunettes
💛 Mixed and multi-tonal shades
🖤 Rooted colours
🩶 Balayage blends

For the most seamless finish, sometimes the best match comes from combining two or more shades to pick up the different tones throughout yours or your client’s hair.

A seamless blend isn’t always about finding one perfect shade. 🤎💛🤎

THE HAIR EMPORIUM - Hair Extensions - Kettering used three shades of 20–22” MVP Flat Weft to create this dimensional prom transformation.

When your client’s natural hair has multiple tones, matching only the dominant colour can leave extensions looking flat.

Look at the depth, mid-lengths and lighter pieces separately, then recreate that variation through your extension shades.

Sometimes the perfect colour match isn’t one shade. It’s three.

❤️ Like this if you love this blend.

It’s a great question, but there’s no universal answer.

The right choice depends on your natural hair, the look you want to achieve, your daily routine and the level of maintenance you’re happy with.

That’s why a professional consultation is so important.

A good stylist won’t recommend the same method to every client. They’ll recommend the one that best suits you.

Whatever method you choose, quality also plays a huge role. Well-processed human hair can feel softer, blend more naturally and last significantly longer when it’s cared for correctly.

Choosing hair extensions isn’t about finding the “best” method.

It’s about finding the best combination of hair quality, fitting method and professional advice for your individual needs.
