Every year I tell myself this summer will be different.

I’ll get ahead with work, be more present with the boys and somehow find that balance everyone talks about.

But every year I realise… there isn’t one.

When you’re self-employed, the school holidays don’t stop your business. Clients still need you, bills still need paying, and if you disappear for six weeks, there’s a good chance some clients will disappear too.

At the same time, these six weeks are precious. I know how quickly my boys are growing up, and I don’t want to miss it.

Some days I feel guilty because I’m working.

Other days I feel guilty because I’m not.

It’s a constant tug of war, and if I’m honest, I don’t think we talk about it enough.

This post isn’t about having the answers. It’s just a reminder that if you’re feeling torn between being there for your family and keeping your business going, you’re not the only one.

As self-employed women, we’re so good at carrying on.

We show up for our clients, our businesses and everyone around us, even when things feel harder than they used to.
