What is Rotator Cuff Pain? 🤔

Rotator cuff pain is a broad term used to describe any pain related to the rotator cuff muscles and tendons, the sub-acromial bursa, and sometimes the acromioclavicular (AC) joint.

🔎 How does it usually present?
• Pain around the shoulder
• Pain that can travel down the arm — sometimes as far as the elbow
• Worse with arm use, especially overhead movements or pushing/ pulling against resistance
• Some people experience night pain, particularly when lying on the affected side

💡 Why does it happen?
Often it’s linked to how much load the shoulder is exposed to compared with what the tissues currently tolerate — not simply “damage” or wear and tear.

✅ How can it be treated?
Management focuses on improving how the shoulder handles load and supporting overall health:

• Load management (modifying activity, not complete rest)
• Progressive strengthening of the muscle–tendon unit
• Assessing and improving biomechanics and movement patterns
• Supporting recovery through good sleep, stress management, and healthy body weight
• Addressing relevant comorbidities and general health factors

The goal isn’t just pain relief — it’s building a stronger, more resilient shoulder that can tolerate the demands of daily life and sport.
