Menopause itself, defined as the point when a woman has not had a menstrual period for 12 consecutive months, marks a significant decline in estrogen levels. This hormonal change further accelerates bone loss and increases the risk of osteoporosis.

Postmenopausal women continue to be at risk for osteoporosis due to ongoing low estrogen levels. Bones become more susceptible to fractures and breaks, particularly in the hips, spine, and wrists.
