Historical Origins and Meanings

Christian Tradition:

In early English history, it was known as Loaf Mass Day. Farmers would bring a loaf of bread to church to be consecrated, offering thanks for the season's first fruits.

In the Roman Catholic calendar, it also coincides with the Feast of St. Peter's Chains.

Pagan/Celtic Roots:

Lammas roughly aligns with the ancient Celtic cross-quarter fire festival Lughnasadh (pronounced loo-nah-sah), which honored the god Lugh.

Modern Pagans and Wiccans still celebrate Lammas as one of the eight major sabbats on the Wheel of the Year.

Quarter Day: Historically, especially in Scotland, Lammas served as one of the four traditional Quarter Days marking the financial and agricultural calendar.
