🏃 ASK A PHYSIO
Should I stop running if my knee hurts?

One of the biggest mistakes runners make is either:
❌ Stopping completely.
Or...
❌ Trying to push through the pain.

Most running injuries improve with the right combination of:
✔️ Understanding what's causing the pain.
✔️ Managing your training load.
✔️ Building strength.
✔️ Gradually returning to running.

The sooner we understand what's causing your symptoms, the sooner we can help you get back to doing what you love.

🏃 Jim has a particular interest in running injuries and helping runners of all abilities return to training safely.

🚫 MYTH MONDAY

How many times have you heard...

"Just stay in bed until it settles."

Years ago that was common advice.

Now we know better.

Most back pain actually improves when people stay gently active.

Walking.

Changing position.

Moving regularly.

Building strength.

Your back isn't fragile.

It's one of the strongest structures in your body.

The trick is finding the right amount of movement—not none at all.

🏊‍♀️🤸‍♀️ Does your young athlete have pain—or want to improve their performance?

Young athletes don’t need to wait until an injury becomes serious before seeing a physiotherapist.

Rosie has extensive experience working with swimmers, dancers, artistic swimmers, hypermobile patients and developing athletes. As a former athlete, coach and physiotherapist with the GB Artistic Swimming Team, she understands the physical demands of high-level training—and the importance of supporting growing bodies properly.

An assessment can help to:

✔️ Understand pain or recurring injuries
✔️ Identify strength, mobility or movement issues
✔️ Manage hypermobility safely
✔️ Build confidence returning to training
✔️ Support long-term athletic development
✔️ Find opportunities to enhance performance

If something doesn’t seem right—or your young athlete simply wants to understand how their body could perform better—please don’t hesitate to book them in.

✨ FACT FRIDAY

You lose around 30,000 skin cells every minute.

Don't worry...

You're not falling apart!

Your skin is constantly renewing itself. As new skin cells are produced in the deeper layers, older cells naturally move to the surface before being shed.

Over the course of a year, you'll lose millions upon millions of skin cells—and your body quietly replaces every one of them.

It's a brilliant example of just how efficiently the human body repairs and maintains itself.

Why does my shoulder hurt more at night?

Many shoulder problems become much more noticeable once you settle into bed.
Whether it's lying on your side, inflammation or reduced movement overnight, shoulder pain can seriously affect your sleep.
The good news? Most shoulder conditions respond really well to the right treatment.
We'll assess exactly what's happening and create a treatment plan designed to get you moving—and sleeping—better again.

⛳ Golfer’s elbow… even if you’ve never picked up a golf club?

Despite the name, golfer’s elbow isn’t just a golfing injury.

It involves pain around the inside of the elbow and can be aggravated by gripping, lifting, pulling, gym work, racket sports, manual jobs — and, of course, golf.

🎥 In this Reel, Jim talks through:
✔️ What golfer’s elbow actually is
✔️ How to manage it
✔️ How the right rehab can help you build back up to the things you want to do

One of the key things to know? Rest alone isn’t always the answer.

Managing your activity, understanding what’s driving the symptoms and gradually rebuilding the capacity of the muscles and tendons around the elbow can all form part of recovery.

If elbow pain is affecting your golf, training, work or everyday life, we can assess what’s going on and put together a plan to get you moving forward.

🚫 MYTH MONDAY

"Pain always means something is damaged."

If that were true...

• Every paper cut would hurt for weeks.
• Every person with arthritis would be in agony.
• Every MRI finding would explain someone's pain.

Thankfully, the human body is much cleverer than that.

Pain is your body's alarm system—not a damage detector.

Sometimes that alarm is spot on.

Sometimes it becomes a little overprotective.

Think of a smoke alarm that goes off every time you make toast.

The alarm is real...

But the house isn't on fire.

One of the biggest parts of physiotherapy is helping calm that alarm system and getting you moving confidently again.

🦴 FACT FRIDAY

Your bones are stronger than concrete... by weight.

It sounds unbelievable, but it's true.

Bone is an incredible material. Pound for pound, healthy bone can withstand enormous compressive forces—making it stronger than many common building materials for its weight.

Even more amazing...

Unlike concrete, your skeleton is alive.

Every day your body removes old bone and replaces it with new bone in a process called bone remodelling. This allows your skeleton to adapt to exercise, repair tiny areas of damage and stay as strong as possible.

That's one of the reasons why strength training and regular weight-bearing exercise are so important throughout life.
