It was an absolute pleasure to head over to the Cambridge Belfry this weekend to style the hair of my wonderful long time client and her daughter, for a very special family birthday celebration party. Occasion hair is very much out of my comfort zone but we were all super happy with the results ✨

When your client says the magic words ‘Geli…..make me a redhead!’ I happily oblige! 👩🏼‍🦰✨ Still maintaining the dimension with some carefully placed freehand lightness but adding that richness only a copper will give 🧡

WHAT IS A GLOSS?

A gloss/toner is a professional colour applied to the hair after a lightening process. It is used to either enhance, or counteract (get rid of) warm tones.

HOW DO GLOSSES WORK?

When lightener is applied to the hair it lifts to a warm tone (EVERYONE’S hair lifts warm!). This warm tone can vary anywhere from red to orange to yellow
- depending on many different factors;
natural hair colour, any previous colour build up, the condition of the hair, etc etc.
Glosses can either do two things.
✨They can ENHANCE the warm tones already showing - for example, turning an orange tone into a beautiful copper or warm brown, or a yellow tone into a sandy or golden blonde.
✨They can COUNTERACT/NEUTRALISE the warm tones - taking an orange tone to a cool-brown, or a pale yellow tone to an icy white blonde.
The only thing glosses can't do, is lift the hair to a lighter/brighter colour. In short: if the hair won't lift past the orange stage, a gloss won't make the hair icy!

CAN I USE PURPLE SHAMPOO?

Yes - purple/silver shampoos deposit colour to help counteract warm tones.
Using these shampoos too often however, can actually darker and dull your blonde hair. I recommend using it 3-4 times a month only after the gloss has started to fade, and stop using the week before you're due back to the salon.

GLOSS MAINTENANCE?

Glosses tend to be demi-permanent colours.
Meaning that they fade over time and will need refreshing. They typically last between 4-6 weeks, depending on the condition of your hair, how often you wash your hair, and the shampoo/products/ amount of heat used on your hair.
When the gloss has completely faded, I recommend booking in for a gloss refresh to maintain the colour. This then allows bigger colour services such as the highlights, to be stretched out for longer.

Sometimes, you just have to go for it! Taking the back up off the shoulders helps to stop the ‘flick’ and creates fullness, whilst keeping length through the front gives shape and softness. Can be worn smooth like this or even with a soft wave too. Winner ✨

Why hide it? Work with what you have naturally. Here I kept the blonde platinum for the blend and underneath added some panels of depth for some texture and contrast.

Playing with a temporary colour just for some fun because WHY NOT?! Using Colour Fresh Mask in 💙 I think her smile says it’s all!

Baby Blonde ✨

Using a simple but effective technique of fine ‘baby lights’ in the areas where the sun would naturally hit the hair, glossing with a iridescent pearl to add plenty of bright reflects.
