I’ve worked with Jak Jak Fairley through this whole camp, and what people don’t understand about MMA is — it’s not just fighting. It’s attrition. Your body gets broken down every single day.

Here’s what fight camp really does to a fighter like Jak:

His neck is wrecked from wrestling and head fighting.
His hips are locked from playing guard and defending takedowns.
His lower back is overloaded from sprawls, clinch work, and heavy S&C.
His shins and calves are battered from kicks and checks.

If you don’t stay on top of that, it turns into an injury that pulls you out of the fight.

My job with Jak hasn’t been to give him a “relaxing massage.”

My job has been:

1. Keep his hips mobile so he can shoot and sprawl fast
2. Keep his neck and shoulders free so he can wrestle without getting stuck
3. Make sure his glutes are actually firing, so his lower back isn’t taking all the load
4. Flush his legs out so he can recover and go again tomorrow — and the day after that

Early in camp we were doing deep work — finding the old injuries and compensation patterns.

In the middle of camp — the hard sparring weeks — it was all about damage control and recovery.

Now in fight week, it’s about keeping him loose, calm, and sleeping well while he cuts weight.

This is the boring, unseen work that wins fights. Not the highlight reels.

Jak has done everything right this camp. Professional, disciplined, shows up and does the work — even on the recovery days.

Proud to be part of his camp and having him chose me to work with him through his MMA journey …

This is something I tell clients all the time — 90% of lower back pain I see isn’t actually starting in the lower back.

Your lower back is often just the victim. Your legs are usually the cause.

Think of it like this: Your lower back is in the middle. If anything above or below it isn’t doing its job, your back has to do extra work.

The 3 biggest culprits from your legs:

1. Tight Hamstrings (Back of your thighs)
Your hamstrings attach to the bottom of your pelvis. When they’re tight, they pull your pelvis down and backwards. That flattens your lower back and puts constant strain on it.

Sign: Your back hurts more when you’re sitting for a long time, or when you try to touch your toes.

2. Tight Hip Flexors / Quads (Front of your thighs)
If you sit a lot — desk job, driving — your hip flexors get short and tight. They pull your pelvis FORWARD. That forces your lower back to arch excessively. So now your lower back muscles are constantly squeezed.

Sign: Your back aches when you’re standing for a long time, or after walking. You feel better when you pull your knees to your chest.

3. Glutes That Aren’t Firing (Your bum muscles)
Your glutes are meant to be the strongest muscles in your body. They power walking, running, squatting. If they’re weak or “asleep” from sitting all day, your hamstrings and lower back have to do the lifting instead.

Sign: Your back hurts after glute bridges, squats, football, or going up stairs. Your bum doesn’t feel sore after a leg day, but your back does.

And the one everyone forgets: Calves & Ankles
If your ankles are stiff and your calves are tight, you can’t squat or run properly. Your body compensates by bending more from the lower back. Again, back takes the hit.

Recovery isn’t an extra. It’s the training.

Everyone wants to go harder in the gym. But if you’re not recovering, you’re not actually improving.

You break your body down IN the gym. You build it back up OUTSIDE the gym.

3 things I tell all my clients to keep on top of:

1. Don’t skip the boring stuff
Sleep, water, food. If you’re getting 5 hours sleep, training 6x a week and wondering why you feel wrecked... that’s your answer. 7-9 hours sleep is where your body does 90% of its repair.

2. Active Recovery.
Sore? Don’t just sit on the sofa for 3 days. Light movement, stretching, walking, regular massage therapy.
Get blood flowing to the sore areas. Promoting heathy muscle growth, better range of movement and resetting your body’s nervous system.

3. Listen to the warning signs
That tightness that won’t go away, that niggle in your knee, that constant fatigue. That’s not you being soft, that’s your body saying “help me out here.” A 30 min maintenance session now saves you 3 weeks off injured later.

You can’t out-train bad recovery.
