Runners — now is the time to get stronger. 🏃💪
If your races are starting to slow down and your weekly volume is dropping, use that opportunity to work on the areas that usually start to cause problems when the miles build back up.
The calf that always gets tight.
The Achilles that starts to grumble.
The knee that appears once the mileage increases.
Rather than waiting for those niggles to return, build the strength and capacity now so you're better prepared for your next training block.
Over the next few weeks I'll be sharing some simple exercises targeting the common issues I see with runners in the clinic.
Got an area that always gives you trouble when your mileage increases? Drop it in the comments or send me a message — I'll be happy to help.

MEET OX.
From years of Achilles issues and nearly stepping away from competitive football… to Player of the Year.
“I felt like I had exhausted different types of physios and treatments.”
Some things helped initially, but the problem kept coming back and never really seemed to ease off.
THE PROBLEM WASN’T JUST SOMETHING THAT NEEDED ‘TREATING’.
We identified areas that needed more strength and capacity, then progressively worked on building those up to better tolerate the demands of football.
Alongside the strengthening work, we’ve used regular sports massage to help manage tightness, improve mobility and keep him moving well.
“IT’S MADE ME FEEL YOUNG AGAIN WHEN IT COMES TO SPORT.”
“It’s the most mobile I’ve felt in years and ultimately given me a lot of confidence back that I can keep playing competitive sport.”
And importantly, it wasn’t an overnight fix. It’s been a gradual process of consistently building strength, improving movement and keeping him playing.
“I FELT LIKE I WAS CLOSE TO STEPPING DOWN…”
In his mid-30s, after playing competitive football all his life, his Achilles problems were starting to make him question whether he could continue playing at the level he wanted.
FROM NEARLY HANGING UP HIS BOOTS…
TO PLAYER OF THE YEAR.
“I was recently voted as Player of the Year for the team. For an outsider looking in it probably seems like a small achievement — but on a personal level it felt massive for me.”
“It’s given me reassurance that my body is able to cope and continue with the demands of playing competitive sport.”
You rest. You stretch. You go back to your activity and the pain is still there.
Sound familiar?
I see it time and time again in clinic. The expectation that some rest and stretching will solve the problem.
And I get it, because often times you've been told this by another professional. That some basic stretches are enough and everything will be fine.
But here's the thing, every time you feel that pain or niggle you loss a bit of strength and capacity within the muscle or tendon. And by the time you've got round to seeing someone about it, it's in a pretty bad place.
So stretches alone at this point won't fix it.
We need to rebuild. Strengthen the area and rebuild capacity and tolerance within those tissues to get you back to doing what you love.
Unsure where to start? Drop me a message or book an appointment and let's get you back to where you should be.
Training like before. Entering those events. Moving without pain.

When should you book a sports massage? 💆♂️
You don’t need to be injured or in pain to benefit from sports massage.
When you're training hard and asking a lot from your body, it's normal to experience muscular soreness, stiffness and fatigue. Sports massage can be a great addition to your recovery routine, helping you manage that accumulated tension and keep moving comfortably between sessions.
The goal? To help you feel ready to train and perform at your best.
Whether you're building towards a race, pushing numbers in the gym or simply training consistently, prioritising your recovery is part of the process.
Train hard. Recover well. Perform better. 💪

Geena’s Story 🏃♀️
From non weight bearing to pain free running !
When Geena first came to see me, she had been struggling with undiagnosed hip pain for months. Running and training had stopped, and at its worst, even walking or spending too long on her feet was difficult.
She had already tried physiotherapy but unfortunately hadn’t seen the progress she’d hoped for. By the time we started working together, she felt lost and was worried she might have to stop running completely — or never get back to the level of fitness she'd worked so hard to achieve.
Fast forward to now… pain-free running, a running holiday in the Alps and here crossing the finish line at the Cumbernauld 10K. 🙌
We've worked together to gradually build things back up — managing symptoms, identifying areas we could work on, building strength and progressively increasing what her body could tolerate. Just as importantly, we've worked through the little niggles and setbacks that inevitably come with returning from injury.
And the result?
🏃♀️ Weeks of pain-free running
🚴♀️ Back teaching spin classes
💪 Stronger and more confident in training
❤️ Actually enjoying training again
Something Geena said really sums up what we've been trying to achieve:
“I always leave feeling a sense of reassurance that I will be able to rebuild and that there are things within my control to work on.”

🏃 Excited to be supporting the William Wallace Running Festival!
On 10th October, Stirling Sports Clinic will be there supporting runners with pre and post-event sports massage. After supporting the Stirling 10K for the past two years, I'm really looking forward to getting back to event support and being part of another brilliant local running event.
As well as massage, I'll be around throughout the event to chat about anything running, injuries, rehabilitation or strength & conditioning — so if you've got a recurring niggle, questions about your training, or want to know how strength work could support your running, come over and have a chat.
Whether you're getting ready to race or looking for some help after crossing the finish line, come and say hello! 👋

Chronically tight traps?
Dry needling is one of our clients’ favourite treatments for that stubborn tight, tense feeling through the upper traps, neck and shoulders.
By targeting specific areas of muscle, dry needling can help reduce pain and sensitivity and temporarily reduce that feeling of tightness — and we regularly hear clients say they feel noticeably freer afterwards.
⚡ Quick treatment
🎯 Targeted approach
🙌 A client favourite for tight traps
It’s not a magic fix, but when used at the right time alongside movement, rehab and strength work, it can be a really useful tool.

Kev’s Story 🏃♂️
When Kev first came to the clinic, he wasn’t chasing PBs. He was worried he might have to stop running altogether.
After four months of reduced activity, ongoing knee pain and the stress of not knowing whether he’d be able to return properly, Kev admits he was nervous about that first appointment.
He’d already sought advice and treatment elsewhere, which had helped ease the pain, but he still didn’t feel like he understood why the problem kept happening.
The first step wasn’t jumping straight into treatment.
We talked through Kev’s history, assessed his movement and compared the strength, mobility and function of both legs.
That assessment highlighted some areas we could immediately work on. His squat and lunge technique needed attention, and rather than helping, some of the exercises he was doing were potentially contributing to the problem.
But there was another piece of the puzzle.
After asking Kev about his hamstrings and assessing them further, it became clear they were a significant contributor to what he was experiencing.
So we adjusted the plan.
From uncertainty to progress
The focus became progressive strength work, better movement and gradually building Kev’s capacity to run again.
It wasn’t an overnight fix , it was a process of understanding what his body needed, working consistently and building confidence alongside strength.
And the difference has been huge.
In Kev’s words:
“I’ve basically had multiple PBs in every distance this year… Some of the PBs have been at paces I never thought were remotely possible for me in the past.”
But perhaps more importantly, the impact has gone beyond running.
Kev says his general fitness, work life and home life have all improved, and he’s back enjoying pain-free walks with his wife — something that means far more than any race time.
From fearing the end of running → to running faster than he thought possible.
That’s what good rehab should be about.
Not simply reducing pain for a few days, but identifying what we can change, building the body back up and giving someone the confidence to do the things they love again.
