With the Autumn Budget approaching, we want our industry to be heard.

At Ed’s Hair, we strongly believe in the employed salon model.

Employment gives hairdressers security: a regular wage, paid holidays, sick pay, workplace pensions and the protections that come with being properly employed.

But maintaining that model is becoming harder.

Rising employment costs and 20% VAT on salon services are putting huge pressure on labour-intensive businesses like ours. More salons are moving towards chair rental and self-employment.

Self-employment absolutely has a place in our industry. But it should be a genuine choice, not something salons or hairdressers feel financially forced into.

And we need employed salons to train the next generation.

Apprentices need businesses that can employ them, teach them, mentor them and give them the foundations for a proper career.

That’s why, ahead of the Autumn Budget, we support the call to:

✂️ CUT VAT ON SALON SERVICES FROM 20% TO 10%.

We want to pay our fair share of tax.
We want to protect workers’ rights.
We want to create proper careers.
We want to train the next generation.
And we want employed salons to have a future.

This isn’t employed versus self-employed.

It’s about a fairer playing field where different business models can exist and employment remains a real choice for the next generation.
