A third of people (33%) eligible for bowel cancer screening in the UK don’t complete their test, data revealed by the UK’s leading bowel cancer charity Bowel Cancer UK has shown.
The bowel screening programme helps to spot bowel cancer before symptoms start, when it’s most treatable. A screening kit will be sent to you in the post if you’re within the age range for the screening programme and registered with a GP.
Bowel cancer is more common in people over the age of 50, but it can affect anyone of any age. If you’re below the screening age and are worried you may have symptoms of bowel cancer, go to see your GP. They may give you an at-home test, known as a symptomatic FIT. This is similar to the bowel cancer screening test — it also looks for blood in your poo, but it’s only given if you have symptoms of bowel cancer.
In North Staffordshire there is a high % of people aged 50 to 59 that are invited to be screened but are not completing the FIT kit.
Early detection is key if you do receive a screening FIT kit, please do your bit and complete the kit!!

We were invited to Holborn Place to join a resident meeting to discuss our programme. Residents were very pleased to learn that they can opt in over the age of 75. Residents were also unaware of the free shuttle bus between RSUH and County for any hospital appointments. Silverdale Cricket club also warmly welcomed us to share information to support patients with Dementia and their carers.
April marks a significant milestone, 20 years of the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme, a service that has helped save thousands of lives through earlier detection and timely treatment. Bowel cancer remains one of the most common cancers in the UK, but screening continues to be one of our most effective tools. The at home FIT kit is quick, simple and free and it enables us to identify potential issues at the earliest possible stage, when treatment has the greatest impact.
Early detection saved lives, and together we can help ensure more people benefit from it :)
