MAKEUP ARTISTS FROM NEW COLLEGE VOLUNTEER AT MAKEUP WORKSHOPS FOR CANCER PATIENTS WITH THE CHARITY LOOK GOOD FEEL BETTER
Local organisations joined forces at a recent networking event at New College to help provide make-up workshops for cancer patients.
Staff and Level 3 Beauty and Theatrical Makeup students have been working with the Look Good Feel better charity at the Great Western Hospital to provide make-up workshops to help counteract the visible appearance of cancer treatments.
The team work alongside professionals from Boots, Debenhams and leading product company houses such as Dior.
Liz Lee, Section Leader for Beauty Therapy, Complementary Therapy, Hair and Media Make-up at New College, became the Regional Co-ordinator for the Swindon Region of the charity in April 2012 and helped set up the Centre in the GWH with Macmillan Cancer Nurse Specialist, Carole Curtis. At the networking event both Liz and Carole gave a presentation on how the partnership benefits the patients and the students, with Graham Taylor Principal of New College giving his support too.
This innovative project enhances the students’ professional and technical skills in a healthcare setting or workplace, broadens knowledge and understanding of different client groups, and adds greater value to employment prospects.
The event, hosted by Liz Lee in partnership with VTCT Awarding Body also included a presentation from Jennifer Lenard, a Makeup and Hair Artist, who talked to people and different wigs and how they are made. Katrina Hobbs from Canterbury College also informed people about their partnership with Kent hospitals, along with her students.
Stephen Vickers, CEO from VTCT and his team closed the day by agreeing “The project is a great example of effective partnerships that reflect and support colleges’ delivery of the criteria for the new Study Programmes for 16 - 19 year olds”.
The day also brought together professionals from Wella, Canterbury, Amersham & Wycombe, Weston, City and Islington, Lambeth and Stroud Colleges. Freelance therapists and External Verifiers also discussed further developments around this good practice and how to engage learners to increase employability skills. The whole day was well received and deemed a useful forum for producing ideas and networking, the day concluded with a tour of the colleges Hair and Beauty department which opened in September 2011.

Level 3 Diploma in Theatrical, Special Effects, Hair and Media Makeup do Halloween !!!
Section Leader Liz Lee, Tutor Cathie Lowe and Level 3Diploma in Beauty Treatments learners – Lauren Bright, Lucy Yeandell, Melissa Cheetham, Kelsey Bird, Megan Lewis, Emily Lune, Kelsey Smith, Annie Butler and Chloe Sudgen worked with the Look Good Feel Better Charity based at Swindon Great Western Hospital to deliver a makeup workshop for Cancer Patients.
It was the first time for the students who were understandably nervous about helping cancer sufferers. It was a great workshop ! Ladies, some quite ill, were laughing and giggling. Students were performing mini facials, talking and advising them on makeup. They helped to welcome the ladies, get them drinks and tidied up afterwards!
Distinction is very pleased to be part of the Look Good, Feel Better Charity, with Liz Lee as Regional Co-Ordinator for Swindon.
The Department also raised £100 for the Charity earlier in the year with a Raffle at their Compeition Prize Giving Event.
Well done to Liz and the students.
