Reasons I love old dogs…
Fly is 12 and has truly perfected her don’t care attitude. Not only does she look happy that she rolled in poo then in dead fish before a smelly ditch swim, she then got back in the ditch and stuck her tongue out!
Finn is only 9, he’s happy he rolled but still listens to me just enough that he stopped when asked and looks sad. Even though I know he’d do it again given the chance.
I love Fly’s cheeky attitude and I’m so glad she’s not slowing down at all as she ages, I just wish I couldn’t smell either of them 🤢

Lovely to see Rusty again this week. He responded really well to his first course of treatment after a cruciate ligament injury earlier in the year, and his owners have been really careful with building up his exercise, so it was great to find that he’s walking really well now. He even managed to spend a weekend with his best dog friend without any ill effects 😃

It’s obviously tiring having a massage! Once I’d worked through a couple of painful spots Ruby snoozed her way through her treatment with her teddy bear as a pillow 😴
Ruby had done a little bit too much running on the beach with her terrier friend and forgot that she’s not quite as young and quick as him, so she was a little stiff afterwards. But with a few quiet days and a massage she’s back to her bouncy self again
People are often surprised when I find an injury or sore area on a dog during a muscular check or maintenance treatment. They haven’t seen anything of concern, their dog hasn’t had an accident and they’re always careful.
The thing is no matter how careful we are, some dogs don’t get the memo about self preservation! Florrie was out by herself because it was raining and I didn’t want her chasing around with Finn on slippery ground (it was him I was worried about, not her)! She was looking cute doing zoomies so I picked up my phone to record and happened to see her face plant in to gravel at the start of the video.
This shows how easily dogs can potentially injure themselves without us noticing as we don’t normally watch them 24 hours a day. It’s really worth getting your dog checked out from time to time so all the crashes and slips don’t end up building up to be a chronic problem.

It can be tough having an older or injured dog who doesn’t know how to slow down and relax. Pop dog always tried to live life at 100mph even when her body couldn’t keep up, and I spent a fair bit of time coming up with ways to keep her calm and happy without letting her break herself 🙈
I’m fortunate that my current dogs are pretty easy to keep calm and happy, yes even the mad puppy! But having worked hard to keep Poppy happy and enjoying life as she aged, hopefully some of the things I tried can help other older or injured dogs stay calm and content. Even crazy Springers!

Here’s the gorgeous Rusty relaxing at the end of his treatment last week with a chew on Mr Bear!
Rusty is having treatment to resolve some ongoing lameness after a cruciate ligament injury earlier this year.
Rusty was an absolute star, enjoying his treatment cuddled up next to me on the sofa. Looking forward to seeing this lovely little one again in a few weeks 😊

Woodland walks are our absolute favourite. I love seeing the dogs running free doing dog things (maybe not the muddy bog snorkelling, that smelt bad!) and all of them sleep well afterwards.
Off lead wood walks give dogs the chance to use a wide range of muscles and practice different movements that they just don’t get on a flat or on lead walk. Yesterday mine swam, climbed, jumped, ran, and played chase games. They also did plenty of slow mooching and sniffing.
We do vary walks each week for variety and fitness, there are lead walks and free running through fields, but the woods are definitely favourite with all three. And they apologise if they suddenly leap out of a bush in front of anyone!

Benji was giving me his best sad eyes after treatment last week. He’s been up to his old tricks of crashing around in the woods and was feeling a little sore.
Luckily his owner is fab at spotting any sign of pain so I was able to treat him before it became a bigger issue. I’ve had words with him about being a little more careful when he runs, somehow I don’t think he’ll have listened!

Fly spent yesterday being my little helper while I had a great day learning some new skills. I carry out a minimum of 25 hours CPD per year, although usually far more, to make sure I keep my knowledge as up to date as possible.
Fly wasn’t sure about getting involved at first, she struggles to relax near other dogs, and doesn’t really enjoy massage. Her response was amazing though, she went from tense and unsettled to sleeping on the table 😴 Definitely techniques I’ll be using again to help with her anxiety, I don’t think she’ll complain about being my practice dog!

Fab day at Ferne Animal Sanctuary dog show yesterday. It was great to be back at a show after so long, and lovely to see so many dogs. I carried out free muscular health checks for a real mix of dogs, from puppies to veterans, and chatted to people about the benefits of massage. And I finally got to use my pop up banner! Thanks to Hallie, Cuba and Trinket for modelling for me 😁
Florrie worked hard as helper dog, she did well for her first show but she’s got a long way to go before she can do the job as well as Poppy used to
