One of the few supplements that I take is NZ blackcurrant extract produced by CurraNZ. It's been repeatedly been shown both in research and in the field to produce improvements in endurance performance and recovery including reducing DOMS.

Unfortunately in the chaos of preparing for my vacation I left this one behind 😫 and today I'm suffering with DOMS from a new conditioning routine. On the plus side I know that it definitely works when I take it 💪 In the UK store you can use the code AFACTIVE for 15% off.

Spent the morning taping up my outdoor funbags. They take a lot of punishment as everyone likes playing with my funbags but this should keep them going for a bit longer. Just because something has seen better days, doesn't mean you have to throw it away.

TRAIN FOR FUNCTION NOT CIRCUS TRICKS
Functional training is a type of exercise that focuses on improving the body's ability to perform everyday tasks. This type of training typically involves exercises that mimic the movements we make in our daily lives, such as squatting, lunging, pushing, and pulling. Functional training can be done with or without weights, and it can be tailored to fit any fitness level.

Circus tricks, on the other hand, are typically performed by athletes who have trained for years to develop the strength, balance, and coordination necessary to execute them. These tricks are often very impressive, which is why you see them on TikTok and Instagram but they do little to improve how you move, look and feel. In fact, some circus tricks can actually be harmful to the body if they are not performed correctly.

So, which is better? If you are looking to improve your overall fitness and health, then functional training is the better option. They may not be "gram worthy" but they are effective for improving everyday function.

Here are some of the benefits of functional training:

🏋‍♂️Improved strength and endurance

🏋‍♀️Increased range of motion

🏋‍♂️Improved balance and coordination

🏋‍♀️Reduced risk of injury

🏋‍♂️Improved posture

🏋‍♀️Increased energy levels

🏋‍♂️Weight loss or maintenanceImproved mental health

Here are some tips for getting started with functional training:

Start with basic exercises and gradually progress to more challenging ones.Focus on proper form and technique.Listen to your body and don't push yourself too hard.Warm up before each workout and cool down afterwards.Be patient and consistent with your training.

Functional training is a great way to improve your overall fitness and health. With a little planning and effort, you can start seeing results in no time.

Stength training for runners

Strength training is an important part of any runner's fitness routine. It can help to improve running performance, prevent injuries, and boost overall health.

Some of the key benefits of strength training for runners include:

🏃‍♂️Improved running performance: Strength training can help to increase muscle mass, which can lead to improved running speed and endurance. It can also help to improve your running form which saves you energy.

🏃‍♀️Reduced risk of injuries: Strength training can help to strengthen the muscles and tendons that support the joints, which can reduce the risk of injuries such as shin splints, runner's knee, and plantar fasciitis.

🏃Improved overall health: Strength training can help to improve cardiovascular health, bone health, and mental health. It can also help to reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

You should aim to strength train two to three times per week. Each strength training session should focus on all of the main movements patterns of Squat, Lunge, Push, Pull, Hinge and Carry.

When strength training, it is important to use proper form and technique. If you are unsure of how to do an exercise, it is best to ask a personal trainer for help. They can help you develop a safe and effective strength training program that's tailored to your individual needs.

Strength training is a great way to improve your running performance and prevent injuries. So if you're a runner, make sure to incorporate strength training into your training plan. You'll be glad you did!

This photo is from 3 years ago when I completed my first Ultradistance run- the Fullsteam Fortitude. It was the last event before the UK went into it's first of many lockdowns.

This time tomorrow I will be running the 9th lap of ten on the same challenging race but this time I'm aiming to complete all ten laps on the 4mile course for the first time (as opposed to 5x 4mile and 5x 3mile) 😬

I've spent the last 6 months training and preparing for this event and all going well I will succeed. My plan is to take each lap in a controlled pace allowing about 5 minutes to refuel, freshening up then go out again. Unless I get mugged by a purple dinosaur for my CurraNZ on the course I'm quietly confident I can do it this time. I'll aim to post some updates throughout the day.
