Some people (I LIKE TO THIK THE MINORITY), really test me. Here goes.... (The situation I'm about to disguss is very real, local girl & why to not mix business with pleasure). I'm not a name & Shame a person. I'm happy to share my story. Hopefully you'll not make the same mistake...
A long while ago now I had designed these stairs and the quality 9r my work is as seen in the pictures. Lovely clients except one (I'm not talking about you with the little baby boy or Di with a lovely heart)... I had just started out doing the above. Maybe done 4 or 5 stairs but expirience was 20 plus yrs so I was not cow girl. Any issues I wanted to sort and build myself on trust...

A lady asked me to goto her house to measure up for her stairs doing like in the photo (it takes along time every glitter board needing cutting step by step and carpet because the steps were different sizes by 3/4 millimetres...

This lady befriended me... Text me about personal issues & I felt for her situation over her mental ill health, over her divorce, court trips, not having her children live with her...

I was such a softie!!!!!

I gave her a quote for her stairs (the prices differed between £230 plus depending on which underlay was used, what rods and how many, the type of carpet etc..... She wanted Black glitter on the stairs (I'd advised grey glitter for less maintenance) which had 2 turns in the stairs - it was huge, and 2 carpets through to the big bedroom 5x6m and smaller room 5x4m. I offered her discounted price for 2 bedrooms, the stairs, the landing, underlay (not the best quality but what did she want)... £695.

Glitter Black boards cut & fitted... £695

Ok so this lady asked if a payment plan was possible. I agreed. £200 the 1st payment and £200 every month BUT... Our agreement was her payment plan would take a months to pay off so the work wouldn't be finished until the final payment was up. (2 half to 3mths).

I had to have help with me as it was a big job. There were 3 of us. A good job too!! The 2 boys removed her storage boxes and cupboard out of her small bedroom into her bathroom and upstairs landing. Her & I had a cuppa whilst the boys did that. She's disguss us having a beauty night as she does her neighbours hair n face masks etc...

I fitted the small bedroom with brand new underlay... Fitted the carpet, as it should be with a kickboard etc. It was great. Looked awesome.

Next visit was arranged about 3 wks time (remember the payment plan... I wasn't planning to finish until the last payment of £95 during month 3)...

The next visit... I took along the 2 lads to help move the furniture. We couldn't believe that she hadn't had her family over to help move the bed out. The 2 lads unscrewed her bed, flat packed it carefully in the small bedroom so I could fit the carpet.

I got the 6x4 bedroom finished the boys put back together her double bed and moved it back into the big bedroom.

I started the top of the landing. That got finished and we'd agreed (client/friend & me) to attempt to use the new professional Carpet Seaming hot glue in the doorways instead of carpets plates.

It was OK when we left.

Both bedrooms and the start of the stairs were professionally done.

The 1 thing needing to be changed (silly honesty character)... Was a £20 6ft single rod I generously put down FREE as she had old style fitted wardrobes she wanted me to carpet along them.

Payments made at this stage a £200 & £95 Everything was heavily discounted and she continued to befriend me... Tried to offer Crystal glasses as payment & other stuff. I said I had not issue about the payment plan... But it can't be finished until its paid in full.

Even though this was true I started putting glitter back boards on to make a start on the stairs but this would take about 3 afternoons.

I'd shown her the scratch on the 6ft plate I'd put down to ensure a clean crisp finish between her built in wardrobe and her new carpet.

That must have set off a new thought process for her!!!!

I took FREE carpets rods to fit them between the landing and 2 bedrooms (I didn't use stick down rods either... Drill down sort).

So at this point...

1...i was changing a 6ft £20 rod that I didn't need to have put down in the 1st place (I was proud of building my portfolio)

2...her parents went to look at the carpet and asked why had she chosen black... So depressing we're her words. She wasn't happy they'd criticised her choices. I reminder Ed her of the Grey glitter carpet I had suggested at the start - but she said she wanted black glitter.

After her parents had visited...

She contacted me to say the stairs carpet had a mark on it, could I go through to look. I thought she was talking about having door plates put down instead of the hot professional glue carpet seam.

3...I'd had £395 from her so far!

I took up the landing stairs carpet (it had been burnt 10p size from the hot carpet glue iron) you could only see it when you got down very close. But... It was an error on my end so... I went and ordered more carpet I now, at this point, had paid for her carpets and for them fitting...as well as lads removing the furniture from both bedrooms.

How much little respect for myself did I have😳😳😕😕

I took the new carpet to hers to start the stairs when she invited me upto her big bedroom and what I was looking at were the large bedroom carpet had been forced up here and there with a screw driver or something... She asked for a full refund.... What a numpty I was. I replied Just don't pay the rest of what you owe and I gave her £80 cash back for the alleged large bedroom carpet that had been dug up here and there (I Knew the bedrooms were brilliant).

I ended up poorly, mental ill health consumed me.

Unfortunately... My dearest father passed away 19th July 2021 & I adored him. I messaged the lady in question to let her know that I'd see her after the funeral. Which was 5 weeks after he passed. 😢😢😢

I cannot believe how gullible I was!!!

When she messaged the following days after his funeral....

She'd messaged to say she wants the £695 refund and the stairs glitter board finishing as compensation for the wait times.

What would you have done?
At any given point.......

On pause atm... A huge devastating funeral tomorrow of my dad. I love him with every cell in my body. A humble man but they needed an angel in heaven - they certainly got one I my dear dad. I'm proud of the wreaths I made for my sister, me, my husband & my boys. It was an honour, even if he went too soon and too suddenly.

After living a life of loving everything and everyone - allowing myself to be pushed around. I've had 32 jobs! I've been fired for incidents that didn't happen, I was set up brutally! It caused me to have a full blown breakdown. I loved that job, caring for others with mental ill health. The hours of the job went well with depression and mania periods and I saw myself there indefinitely. That was 2012 and I was hospitalised in front of my children who were then ages 11 and 12 boys. They watched me be cared for in an ambulance (in a retail park) and escorted to a hospital. See, I'm adopted - my biological parents couldn't look after me. I had a fear that if Dr's knew I couldn't cope now and again then my huge FEAR was to have my children taken off me! That fear consumed me that day... Even though there'd only been 3 of us from the bits being ages 2 and 3 (my ex husband, my children's dad had an affair and wouldn't be a blended family he didn't help and have regular contact, emotionally, physically or financially). I'm not the only one in that situation... We had our pet dog though... Buster! He was my rock.
My point is...
When this happened march 2012
I was given a choice by the mental health professions. If they detained me any longer they could get the long term help I needed but if I did - I wouldn't be allowed a visa for florida. In January 2012 8wks prior to my break down) I'd put a relative deposit down for a once in a lifetime holiday... This amount was only a quatre of the grand total which needed to be paid before we were to fly in 6 weeks time. What did I do... Mentally pulled myself together, found strength to go home, have a few nights on sleeping tablets, my children came home and I kicked my arse to work constantly to make up for the wages I'd lost during my breakdown and we went to florida that same year, just the 3 of us. Dolphin swims, all inclusive days out, Universal studios etc... And the days I wasn't so well, we stayed nr the hotel. That has just reminded me... Put your mind to something and you can do it - no matter what your circumstances. With love! Remembering the above to help me cope today. My amazing dad suddenly died this Yr fathers day night. And I'm going to achieve freedom and help others along the way too.
