✨ The Golden Horseman, Dresden ✨

A spectacular example of gilded sculpture and historic craftsmanship, the Golden Horseman depicts Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland, on horseback.

Created between 1732 and 1734 by German artist and blacksmith Ludwig Wiedemann, the monument was based on a design by French sculptor Joseph Vinache.

The brilliant golden finish makes this magnificent equestrian statue one of Dresden’s most recognisable landmarks — a striking reminder of how gilding has been used for centuries to create monuments of lasting grandeur. ✨

to when I was knocking up some trophies for Sunday Drivers Club Aero Club show '26 (okay, it was only a couple of weeks ago, but it is in the past).

Alex gave me a shout and asked me to do the Top 5, Best Patina & Best American trophies. He also contacted me a week later to do a Best Post 1995 one.

For the Top 5, I cut 5 ali ovals out on the Swift-Cut plasma at my day job at Triumph Fabrications LTD. and painted up lacework bases with Custom Paints Inc flake & candy rattle cans. Then added turned gold leaf lettering.

Best Patina was a particularly gnarly carpenters saw with varigated gold leaf lettering.

For Best American, I used a chrome valve cover with a little figurine of a bald eagle ( his name is Chet ) with aviators stolen from a rubber duck.

The slightly last minute Best Post 1995 was a Mid Century Modern mirror with painted lettering.

Something a little special for a returning customer’s new home ✨

They wanted to make a feature of the original fireplace hearth with stone carved lettering.

We ran through some concepts and decided on gloss in Off Black 57 with a 23ct oil gild to bring out the aged lettering.

A lot of prep to stabilise the old stonework and smoothing it (as much as you can given its age!) for a quality gloss finish that still shows the natural patina brought with age.

Was definitely a challenge laying the loose leaf with an open chimney!
