Benefits of massage for the foetus:
Many of the above benefits apply to the foetus also, such as receiving an improved supply of well-oxygenated blood with nutrients for healthy growth and development.
• A relaxed, calm mother will make the growing baby feel secure and decreased levels of cortisol and other stress hormones will be passed into the baby’s system .
• Touch, both pre-natal and perinatal, seems to be formative for both babies and their parents, establishing patterns of intimacy and sociality for life (research by Tiffany Field). Negative touch - touch deprivation, birth and perinatal trauma - hs lifelong effects, as do the positive experiences of an easy birth and welcoming touch and nurturing.
• Babies still in utero seem to actively enjoy touch on the mother’s abdomen, often responding to it with movement. Research at Dundee University in June 2015 (Viola Marx) using 4D ultrasound imaging whilst the mothers touched and rubbed their abdomen produced increased arm, head and mouth movements, especially in the third trimester.
• Listening to her voice, by contrast, calmed and reduced movement.
As massage therapists, I can therefore make a positive influence on the development of healthy bodies and psyches!
I found it very impressive to learn new techniques and different postures for providing effective massage to pregnant women.

- Aids in improving sluggish digestion, helping to avoid hemorrhoids and constipation.
- Promotes relaxation.
- Enhances sleep quality.
- Decreases stress hormones (such as cortisol) and lowers anxiety levels.
- Increases feel-good hormones (serotonin and dopamine), boosts the release of oxytocin and improves overall mood and well-being.
- Provides valuable time away from a busy schedule with no other demands.
- Helps the mother become more in tune with her body, heightening awareness of tensions and teaching her relaxation techniques to assist during labor.
- Strengthens the relationship between the mother and her child.
