Ever thought about what happens to the hair once it’s been cut?
Most people haven’t. But here at Rebel Rebel, we’ve been thinking about it a lot.
The majority of hair cut in the studio gets collected and sent off to by where it’s composted instead of going to landfill.
But that’s not all we do with it.
This might sound a bit weird (or even a bit gross), but when we’re repotting the plants in the salon, we sometimes mix in hair with the soil. And the plants really respond to it. It helps them grow, adds nutrients, and means even less waste from the salon floor.
You know those beautiful big plants we’ve got dotted around the studio? That’s part of how they’ve grown so well.
We’re always looking for ways, big or small, to reduce waste and make the most of what we already have. Because we believe lots of small, thoughtful changes can have a bigger impact over time.
Would you ever try putting hair in your plants?

Rebel Rebel is a co working hair studio, not a traditional salon.
It is a calm space full of plants, light, and independent hairdressers running their own businesses in a way that actually makes sense.
We are here if you want advice or support with pricing, services, or structure. We want you to make good money and enjoy what you do. But those decisions are always yours.
We offer access to the studio from 8am to 8pm, six days a week, so you can work in a way that fits your life and your clients.
The brands you use are entirely up to you. We also have a state of the art colour lab from so you always have the option to never run out of colour again. There are in salon styling products available too, which you can choose to use for a small fee if they suit you.
If you use an online booking system, or another way you prefer your clients to contact you we can link it to our website. Your bookings and your client data stay exactly where they should. With you.
We believe in doing self employment properly, it’s co-working and it’s your business.
👋 Hi there! If you’re new here, we’re a coworking hair salon for independent hairstylists in Watford near Bushey Station. We’re not just a rent-a-chair salon, we’re a supportive community for freelance hairdressers.

At the moment, there’s nothing illegal about a salon having a booking system and putting self employed hairdressers on it. And there’s nothing wrong with you wanting to be on it, as long as you understand the setup and the knock on effects.
When I opened Rebel Rebel Hair Studio in Watford four years ago, I seriously looked into booking systems. On the surface, they sounded like a great service I could offer to freelance hairdressers using the space. But once I dug into them properly, it became clear that in many cases the client data sits with the salon, not the stylist. That didn’t sit right with me.
Depending on the privacy policy, when a client books through a salon system, they’re often giving their details to the salon. That can mean the salon can market to them, run offers, or redirect them elsewhere if you ever move on.
Control is another big factor. If a salon is setting your hours, prices, services, timings, or the way your work is packaged, that’s not true self employment. Those decisions should be yours, so it’s important you have full access and are not being pushed into choices that aren’t yours.
This is exactly why Rebel Rebel Hair Studio operates as a coworking space. Every hairdresser here runs their own business. Your booking system is yours. Your clients are yours.
If a booking system or a salon advertising for you sounds like a great deal, just make sure you understand what you’re signing up to and how it affects you as a business owner.

There is a big difference between genuine self employment and what people call hidden employment, and in hairdressing that line can get blurred very easily.
Being self employed should mean you choose your hours, decide when you take time off, control your own bookings and use the products you believe in. It should feel like running your own business inside a supportive space, not like being an employee without the rights that come with employment.
Hidden employment happens when a hairdresser is labelled self employed but still has to follow employee style rules. Set shifts, needing permission for holidays, being booked by the salon, or being told what brands to use are all signs that the independence isn’t really there.
At Rebel Rebel Hair Studio in Watford, near Bushey, the whole point of our coworking model is to protect that independence. Each hairdresser and hair colourist runs their own business, their own diary and their own way of working, while sharing a calm, professional space.
If you are a stylist wondering whether your setup truly feels like self employment, have a read through the slides and see what fits your reality. And if you want to chat about working in a space that respects your autonomy, you can always message me.

2025 was one of our best years yet at the studio, and a big part of that was watching independent hairdressers really embrace technology like our colour lab.
From a sustainability point of view, this feels huge. Over the past year we created beautiful, considered hair colour while preventing around 570 colour tubes and 40 developer bottles from ever entering the system.
We always recycle anything that does come through the studio, but I think most hairdressers and hair colourists would agree that the most sustainable option is not having that waste in the first place.
For us at Rebel Rebel Hair Studio in Watford near Bushey, this is exactly what progress in hairdressing should look like. Thoughtful colour, independent hairdressers supported properly, and sustainability built into how we work every day.
What changes have made the biggest difference in your small business this year?
15/12/2025
This weekend I went to the Small Business Awards, and honestly, it gave me a real moment to pause.
Placing 14th in the UK felt huge. Not because of a number, but because entering awards makes you stop and look back. You realise how far a small business has actually come, especially when you are usually so busy looking forwards.
Since finalising this entry, so much more has happened. Our Hair Studio in Watford feels really complete right now. We have the most amazing hairdressers working alongside us, the space feels settled, and after four years of being open, .hair.studio finally feels like everything I hoped it would become.
This year has genuinely been on fire. Growth, confidence, change, and a lot of learning along the way.
Going to the awards just made me even more excited for what comes next. I already cannot wait to enter again next year, because this business is still building, still evolving, and there is so much more ahead.
