I’ll be honest, tonight, I’m absolutely EXHAUSTED. I’ve done so much driving recently but bridal transformations like this one make it all worth the while.
Some products here are liquid highlighter, skin tint and blush and translucent powder.

My beautiful Talia who got married at Pynes house. 🤍
It was one of the hottest days I’ve worked this year ☀️ I literally stood and fanned Talia while she spoke with the Registrars 🙈 my arm genuinely ached on the way home but I’ll do anything to keep my brides looking their best 🤍

So I saw this is a thing recently and is it me or is this a bit icky?
On an insta story a few days ago I saw that a prom client of a make up/hair artist won ‘best hair and makeup’ and it’s been on my mind ever since?

It’s an odd one because I love celebrating beauty, but in this instance it’s the age that gets me… ESPECIALLY in THIS day and age where girls are noticing how they look younger and younger.

If I think back to school, I remember how much of mine and my fellow friend’s confidence was tied to how we looked. How, if we didn’t fit the ‘mould’ of what class mates and peers deemed attractive then we were deemed as ‘out casts’ separated from the ‘populate’ which left a lot of us feeling unworthy and I think a lot of women will look back and find pain points around this particular topic?

So since I saw this ‘story’ I have found myself wondering… should beauty be something teenage girls compete over. I know even as grown women our confidence can be knocked so easily, I see it often in my clients and I know it personally and through stories of family and friends.

To me I just think, it’s a prom, everyone should feel beautiful and be celebrated to the same degree; especially when it comes to beauty.

Because, what? so, one girl wins, that’s great, but what about the girls who don’t?

Maybe it’s just a bit of fun and nobody thinks twice about it. Or MAYBE, just maybe, for all the girls already struggling with her confidence, it reinforces that little voice that says, “I’m not pretty enough” or “I’m not worthy”.

Also, who is choosing the award anyway? I mean I thought we had reached a point in this day and age that trying to teach (young) girls that their worth isn’t defined by their appearance.

As a woman with a daughter, and who is really passionate about loving and supporting women, I’d love to know my fellow HMUA’s thoughts on this.

What do you think? Is there depth to this or should I take a chill pill and see some ‘cutesy fun’?

Awards for BEST hair and makeup at Prom?
Problematic or just a bit of fun?
I saw a prom where they gave out an award for ‘Best Hair & Makeup’.

And as someone who does hair and makeup for a living, my first reaction actually surprised me.

Maybe it’s completely harmless.

But I couldn’t stop thinking about the age of the girls involved.

I immediately went back to my own school days. I remember how much of being a teenage girl felt centred around appearance. Who was prettier. Who got more attention. Who was considered the “good-looking” one. Whether you fitted in. Whether you felt enough.

School can already be a place where girls compare themselves to each other without anyone encouraging it.

So I found myself wondering… what does it feel like to turn beauty into a competition?

Of course, one girl wins.

But what about the girls who don’t?

Maybe they laugh it off and don’t think twice about it.

But what about the girl who’s already struggling with her confidence? The one who spent hours getting ready because she just wanted to feel beautiful for one night. Could not winning reinforce that little voice that whispers, “Maybe I’m just not pretty enough.”

I’m not saying that’s what happens.

I genuinely don’t know.

But as adults, we spend years telling young girls that their worth is so much more than how they look.

So does an award like this accidentally send the opposite message?

Could it also pit girls against one another over something they’re already under so much pressure to compare themselves on?

Or am I reading far too much into it, and it’s simply a bit of harmless fun that everyone enjoys?

I’d genuinely love to hear other people’s thoughts because I honestly don’t know where I land. It just made me stop and think.

One thing I’ve learnt after years of styling brides is this…

Some of the biggest hair and makeup decisions aren’t made at the preview. They’re made when a bride finally sits in my chair on the morning of her wedding.

After months of Pinterest boards, saved inspiration and planning every detail, something shifts. I really believe instinct takes over. For the first time, you stop looking at inspiration and start feeling who you want to be as a bride.

The bride in this reel is a perfect example.

When we had her preview, we’d decided on a half-up, half-down style. But on the wedding morning, she sat in my chair, looked at herself in the mirror and quietly said, “I think I want it all down.”

There wasn’t really a reason. It just felt right.

So that’s what we did.

Those moments never worry me. In fact, I’ve learnt to trust them.

Because it’s not about changing your mind for the sake of it. It’s about finally seeing yourself in the moment, with everything suddenly feeling real.

The most beautiful bridal look isn’t always the one you planned months ago.

It’s the one that feels like you when you catch your reflection and think, “Yes… that’s exactly how I wanted to feel.”
