This is where colour goes technical.

It’s not just about knowing that blue neutralises orange or green counteracts red. It’s understanding how much to use, at what depth, at what strength, and in which zone — because every head of hair reveals something different.

I’ll teach you how to read underlying pigment, understand what happens when artificial dark colour is lifted, and use blue, green, gold and neutral mixer tones in controlled ratios to create cleaner, more predictable and longer-lasting results.

We’ll go deeper into competency ratios, pigment strength, zonal formulation and corrective colour theory — so you stop guessing and start understanding exactly why you’re choosing each formula.

The goal is for you to leave with the knowledge and confidence to become a highly skilled technical colourist — someone who can look at a difficult colour correction, understand what’s happening and know how to solve it.

BLACK DYE COLOUR CORRECTION — STEP BY STEP

Removing black artificial colour is never just about lifting it lighter. The real skill is understanding what pigment is revealed underneath and knowing exactly how to control it.

• We started with heavily pigmented black dyed hair
• We carefully lifted out the artificial dark colour
• Once the black was removed, strong orange and copper warmth was exposed underneath
• We assessed each zone separately because the hair does not lift evenly from roots to mids to ends
• We identified exactly where the unwanted orange pigment was sitting
• Blue was introduced specifically to neutralise the orange
• We added extra mix tone into the formula because the pigment already contained within a standard tube is not always strong enough for corrective work
• The strength of the mix tone was adapted through each zone depending on how much warmth was present
• We then balanced depth, tone and pigment to create a natural, dimensional brunette rather than simply covering the warmth with a darker colour
• The finished result is controlled, balanced and bespoke to the hair in front of us

This is the difference between choosing a shade and actually understanding colour.
