🚨 LAST CHANCE TO HAVE YOUR SAY ON SUNBED REGULATION

The Government consultation on strengthening the regulation of commercial sunbeds in England closes at 11:59pm tonight.

SKCIN has submitted a detailed evidence response calling for stronger safeguards to protect the public — particularly children and young people.

As part of our submission, we conducted national Freedom of Information research into how the existing Sunbeds (Regulation) Act 2010 is being monitored and enforced by local authorities across England.

Our findings revealed marked differences in inspection, monitoring, enforcement and record-keeping, with many authorities describing enforcement as reactive, complaint-led or intelligence-led.

Importantly, under-18 use or access was the dominant complaint theme where councils provided a breakdown.

Our submission also raises concerns about misleading and unsubstantiated health claims used to promote sunbeds and strongly supports mandatory, clear and evidence-based information about the health risks of sunbed use.

Based on our national FOI findings and 20 years of experience in skin cancer prevention, early detection and public education, SKCIN has put forward 10 practical, evidence-based recommendations to Government — because stronger legislation must be backed by effective implementation and enforcement.💪

The proposed measures include:

✔ Stronger health warnings
✔ Restrictions on misleading health claims about sunbeds

For more than 15 years, SKCIN has worked to raise awareness of the serious health risks associated with sunbed use and advocate for stronger regulation, prevention and public education.

Having contributed recommendations to the National Cancer Plan and continuing to work alongside the Department of Health and Social Care - DHSC throughout the consultation period and beyond, we are encouraged to see meaningful action being taken on this important public health issue.

The consultation gives members of the public, businesses, local authorities and health experts the opportunity to help shape future sunbed regulation, with stronger protections potentially introduced as early as 2027.

Alongside the consultation, the Government has confirmed it will consider whether even tougher measures are required, with a further call for evidence expected in autumn 2026.

These proposals come amid growing concern over rising skin cancer rates across the UK. In 2023 alone, there were almost a quarter of a million new skin cancer diagnoses. Yet around 90% of cases are preventable, highlighting the critical importance of prevention, regulation and public awareness.
