Lymphoedema Management: Healthy Skin = Healthier Limbs

When we think about managing lymphoedema, compression garments and Manual Lymphatic Drainage often come to mind. But one of the most important parts of treatment happens every single day... looking after your skin!

Why is skin care so important?

The lymphatic system helps protect us from infection. In lymphoedema, this protection is reduced due to the increase in fluid and often fibrotic tissue, making the affected area more vulnerable to bacteria entering through even the tiniest break in the skin.

Good skin care helps to:

** Reduce the risk of cellulitis (a potentially serious skin infection)
** Keep the skin soft, supple and less likely to crack
** Maintain the skin's natural protective barrier
** Support long-term lymphoedema management

Daily skin care tips:

** Wash the skin gently with a mild cleanser
** Dry thoroughly, especially between fingers and toes and any skin folds
** Moisturise every day with an unperfumed emollient or moisturiser
** Treat cuts, scratches and insect bites promptly
** Protect your skin from sunburn, gardening injuries and pet scratches
** Check your skin daily for redness, warmth, swelling or any signs of infection

Seek urgent medical advice if you notice sudden redness, increasing warmth, rapidly worsening swelling, pain, or flu-like symptoms, as these could be signs of cellulitis and may require prompt antibiotic treatment.

Our advice is to draw around the region to monitor for it spreading and take photos every 30 minutes.

Healthy skin isn't just about comfort—it's one of the most effective ways to reduce complications and keep lymphoedema under control.

We are passionate about helping people understand how small daily habits can make a big difference to their long-term lymphatic health.

Protect your skin. Protect your lymphatic system.

There are so many benefits from MLD! Why haven't you booked in yet?! 💛

🧠 How MLD Supports Relaxation (Backed by Physiology & Research)

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is well known for its role in supporting the lymphatic system, but it also has important effects on the nervous system that help explain why many people experience deep relaxation during treatment.👇

1. Nervous system response (parasympathetic activation)🦋

MLD uses very light, slow, rhythmic touch. Research on gentle manual therapies shows this type of stimulation can help shift the body into the parasympathetic “rest and digest” state. 💤

This shift is associated with:

* Lower heart rate
* Decreased blood pressure
* Slower breathing
* A general sense of calm and safety

2. Stress regulation🦋

Studies on massage and light-touch therapies suggest reductions in cortisol, the body’s primary stress hormone. Lower cortisol levels are linked with reduced feelings of stress and improved emotional regulation.

3. Sensory calming effect🦋

The repetitive, predictable nature of MLD strokes can help calm the sensory system. This is why many people report feeling mentally quieter or “reset” during sessions—especially those experiencing stress or overstimulation.

4. Overall well-being🦋

While MLD is not a treatment for mental health conditions, evidence from manual therapy research shows it can improve:👇

* Perceived stress levels
* Relaxation response
* Overall sense of well-being

🔑 Key takeaway

MLD supports the body physically through lymphatic flow, but it also supports the nervous system through physiological relaxation mechanisms. This is why many people experience it as both bodywork and a calming, restorative experience.🩵🦋

This would be fantastic for anyone with Lipoedema, Lymphoedema or who want to give their Lymphatic System a boost!

Apologies for taking a screenshot, but I shared a post from Lipoedema Australia about raising awareness on World Lipoedema Day and Facebook thought I was a danger to the world so restricted my account. I'm terrified of more punishment!

This is standard work for those of us who are highly qualified Decongestive Lymphatic and MLD Therapists. Does your MLD or Lymph Drainage Therapist do the same checks? Contraindications and a full health history is the bare minimum.

Expert care. Specialist and tailored advice. Trust your care to those who are qualified enough to know how to manage health conditions.

⚠️ Not everything you see on social media about Lipoedema is accurate.

Every day, I see videos, posts, and "miracle fixes" being shared as fact on Til Tok, Insta etc.

The truth?

Much of the advice online is oversimplified, misleading, or completely unsuitable for many people living with Lipoedema.

Lipoedema is complex.

What works brilliantly for one person may make another person's symptoms worse. Compression, exercise, Manual Lymphatic Drainage, nutrition, skin care, surgery, supplements – every aspect of management needs to be considered in the context of YOU and YOUR health history.

Your stage. Your symptoms. Your lifestyle. Your other health conditions. Your goals.

There is NO one-size-fits-all approach.

Before spending money on the latest trend, gadget, supplement, or treatment you've seen online, seek advice from a qualified therapist who understands Lipoedema and can provide evidence-based guidance tailored to your needs.

Your body deserves more than social media advice. It deserves professional care.
