Why your hamstrings are always tight (and why stretching isn’t helping) - Part 3
If you’re stretching your hamstrings every single day and they still feel like stiff guitar strings, stop. You might be fighting the wrong battle.
A lot of the time, tight hamstrings are just exhausted because your glutes are slacking off. If your glutes aren’t doing their job when you walk, run, or lift, your hamstrings have to work double shifts to compensate. I see this in my clinic all the time: clients with virtually no glute activation, but incredibly tight, angry hamstrings.
Instead of stretching, you need to get your glutes to actually do their job. Try these out -
🍑Glute Squeezes: Stand up and just practice actively squeezing your glutes. Get used to the feeling of turning them on during the day.
🍑Glute Bridges: Lie on your back, knees bent, and drive your hips up. Squeeze hard at the top.
🍑Prone Hip Extensions: Lie on your stomach and lift one leg straight up, focusing entirely on using your glute (don’t let your lower back take over).
Once your glutes start firing, your hamstrings can finally relax.
Reasons for why your hamstrings are (always) tight and why stretching may not help - part 2
One major reason why your hamstrings always feel tight is that your pelvis is tipped forward, which results in the hamstrings being pulled long from the top.
The fix is to stretch the front of the thigh to put your pelvis back into a more neutral position.

If a muscle isn’t strong enough to handle the amount of loading, the brain will make it feel “tight” to stop you from moving into ranges of motion where the muscle might tear. This is why strengthening (like those Nordic regressions) often fixes “tightness” better than stretching ever will.

Had an incredible weekend at the Peak District supporting all the amazing runners, joggers, and walkers at the event!
Clocked my looooongest shift ever-17 hours over two days. I was in total zombie mode by the end of it🧟🧟🧟.
But I was on a mission to provide free recovery sessions so these amazing participants could drive home safely without legs cramping up, and head straight to bed for a great night’s sleep.
Shout out to the absolute best team ever at — couldn’t have smashed through it without you guys! 🙌
Honestly, I’m just incredibly grateful to be doing what I do every day. Shoutout to all of my amazing clients who make this job what it is. ❤️

❌ There is a huge myth out there that sports massage is about using brutal physical force to mechanically “iron out” tight spots.
✅ The truth is — Massage is a conversation with your brain and this is how it works:
☘️The Right Pressure: When a therapist applies the right amount of pressure—firm and steady, but not agonizing—it triggers special sensors in your muscles called mechanoreceptors.
☘️The Signal Up: These sensors instantly send an electrical signal up to your brain. Because the pressure is skilled and controlled, your brain registers this input as completely SAFE.
☘️The Relax Command Down: Once your brain realizes the tissue is safe, it sends a direct command right back down telling those hypertonic (chronically tight) muscle fibers to finally let go.
🛑 Why Too Much Pain Backfires
If a massage is too aggressive, your brain perceives it as a threat. It panics and triggers a protective guarding reflex—meaning the muscle locks up even tighter to defend itself! This is especially true if the client is already a bit anxious.
The Takeaway:
Great massage communicates with your nervous system to melt away tension, rather than trying to force it by beating up your tissues.
My weekend office view lately. 🖼️
Pamper party bookings have been taking me all over the gorgeous countryside lately. Exploring the hills in the neighboring counties is easily the best perk of the job—and Buxton is my absolute favorite spot so far!

If you’ve got a deep ache that won’t budge, it’s time to talk about DRY NEEDLING.
❓ Is it acupuncture? Not quite! While acupuncture focuses on internal energy and “Qi,” Dry Needling is all about anatomy. We target “trigger points”—which are basically glitches in your muscle’s wiring where the “off switch” is stuck. Dry Needling hits the reset button so the muscle can finally relax.
❓ Why use a needle instead of hands-on massage?
Massage is great for general tension, but Dry Needling wins when we need to be specific:
🪡 Better Depth: It reaches deep muscles that hands can’t reach as effectively, like the deep glutes or the hidden muscles behind the scapula.
🪡 Better Efficiency: For athletes with more muscle mass or “thick” tissue, the needle is the most effective way to get right into the center of a sore spot that hands might struggle to pe*****te.
🪡 Better Comfort: When your upper traps are chronically tight, heavy thumb pressure can be agonizing. Because the needle is so thin, some people don’t even notice it entering—it releases the tension without that “bruised” or “crushed” feeling of deep manual work.
I still advise most clients to start with hands-on massage work—but if you feel like your sore spot is just out of reach, it’s time for a different approach.
Dry needling is only available for mobile appointments. DM to enquire! 📩
