How Soap Was Made In The PAST vs.TODAY

In ancient times,our grandmothers made soap using potash,which they obtained from wood ash. They did not know how strong or weak the potash was because there were no measuring tools or calculators.

For example, if they added more fat than the potash could handle, the mixture would separate. To fix this,they often added more potash, which made their soap very harsh and drying on the skin.

This happens because too much lye(potash) in soap causes it to be rough, irritating, and not skin-friendly.

HOW SOAP MAKING HAS IMPROVED TODAY

In our generation,we now have tools like lye calculator, which has made soap - making safer and more accurate. A lye calculator helps you :

Measure the exact amount of potash needed for each oil

Calculate everything by weight, not volume

Create a formula that is balanced, safe ,and gentle on the skin

This modern advantage helps us avoid harsh soaps and ensures a consistent, high-quality bar every time.

UNDERSTANDING SAPONIFICATION

Saponification is the chemical reaction where lye (potash) combines with oils to produce soap.
Without lye, this process cannot happen.

So remember:

No lye(potash) = No soap.

TYPES OF OILS USED IN SOAP MAKING

We use different categories of oils :

Liquid oils like olive oil and castor oil

Solid oils like coconut oil,palm oil,or sheabutter

Tallow (animal fat)

Each oil has its own purpose:

Castor oil boost lather
Olive oil is moisturising
Coconut oil hardens the soap and helps it foam, but too much can be drying

Understanding your oils helps you create a perfect balance in your recipe.

WHAT IS SUPERFATTING ?

Superfat refers to the extra oil left in your soap that does not react with the lye(potash)

This leftover oil makes the soap softer on the skin, adds moisturizing benefits ,reduce the harshness of the bar

But carefulness comes in here , too much superfat can make your soap too soft or even cause spoilage.

WATER AND SOAP HARDNESS

Reducing the amount of water in your recipe helps your soap harden faster.
Too much water results in a soft bar that takes a long time to cure.

SAFTY RULE YOU MUST ALWAYS FOLLOW

Always pour lye(potash) into water,never water into lye.
Adding water to lye can cause a dangerous reaction that many splash or erupt.
