Yesterday we was invited back to the glam room to help get the girls ready for annual summer party! We had an absolute blast from start to finish! The party was fabulous and the girls were all a pleasure to work with and stunning as always! 😍

Reality vs Instagram

Maybe this is old news but I just wanted to give clients and other hair artists a snippet into the reality of hairdressing and what we have to contend with on a daily basis.

Picture 1 - raw, unfiltered, what the client left the salon with. It was a microsecond capture. In reality, it looked beautiful, it flowed, it moved, it LIVED! This client practically bounced out of the salon, gleaming from ear to ear with utter confidence and sass.

Picture 2 - I asked an app to fill out the ends and smoothen the hair.

Picture 3 - I asked the same app to make the ends look less full and the overall look less polished - to give a more natural finish

All 3 images look beautiful but only 1 of them was created in the salon. The 2 that aren’t real, look incredibly believable. And this is the reality of what both hairdresser and client has to face now on a day to day basis.

If you make an image with AI all you need to do is screenshot it to get rid of the AI watermark. I could have posted any one of these photos as my own work and it’s there for the world to see and believe. A lot and I mean AN AWFUL LOT of hair images, both professional and in the moment photographs that we see online right now have been edited in some way, we all know the professional ones will have been, but this has filtered through to the ‘right now’ ‘there and then’ images.

I’m not posting this to down anyone, there are some amazing hairdressers who post amazing hair that naturally and quite rightly they might have had polished or enhanced. The intention is to highlight the reality of what we both hairdresser and client sees online everyday.

As professionals we strive to help and encourage people seek their goals. I believe that understanding how the lines get blurred is now an essential part of the hairdressing industry. Not just for our clients, but for our own self worth and esteem. We will never win, both hairdresser or client, if we compete with fantasy.
