drinking straws from natural wheat stems

Staramaki is a social company based in a rural region in Greece that utilizes the most widely produced local product, wheat, to create a viable eco-friendly alternative to single-use plastic straws and at the same time create employment opportunities and promote social cohesion.

310 straws per minute. 🌾⚙️

A major milestone for Staramaki.

When we started working on automated individual packaging, many told us it would be extremely difficult—if not impossible—to achieve high-speed production with a natural material that is inherently non-uniform.

Every wheat stem is different.
Different diameter. Different curvature. Different geometry.

Today, our packaging line is running at 310 individually wrapped straws per minute — more than 18,000 per hour.

It took engineering, experimentation, countless adjustments and persistence.

They said it couldn’t be done.

We did it.

And this is only the beginning of scaling Staramaki.

🌾 Harvest 2026 is complete.

Another agricultural cycle has come to an end in the fields of Kilkis — and the raw material for the next generation of Staramaki natural straws is now safely collected.

For us, harvest is much more than the first step in production. It is where Staramaki begins: in the field, together with our farmers, experimenting with varieties and cultivation practices to produce better stems while creating value from a simple agricultural material.

Over the coming months, these stems will go through our production process in Kilkis and be transformed into millions of natural drinking straws — grown by the land, not manufactured from plastic or paper.

A big thank you to Hatgiparadisis Costas, our farmers, and everyone involved in this year’s cultivation and harvest. Every season teaches us something, and every harvest brings us one step closer to making natural plant-stem straws a real alternative at scale.

From the field to the drink. Naturally. 🌾

Harvesting Staramaki is not a conventional harvest.

Our process starts in the field with a very specific sequence.

First, the combine harvester removes only the flower/head of the plant, separating the grain while leaving the valuable stem standing.

Then, we return to the field to mechanically cut the stems at the right length and collect them carefully by hand.

Why so much attention?

Because for us, the stem is not waste.
It is the raw material of Staramaki — a natural drinking straw created directly from the plant’s own hollow structure.

This harvesting method allows us to preserve the quality, length and integrity of each stem, so it can later be sorted, sterilised and transformed into a functional, biodegradable straw.

From field to straw, every step matters.

Nature provides the design.
We build the process around it.

Today we had the pleasure of welcoming students and professors from Perrotis College of the American Farm School of Thessaloniki to Staramaki in Kilkis.

The visiting group included students from the University of Georgia (UGA), USA, who came to see first-hand how a simple wheat stem can become a natural drinking straw — and how local agricultural production can be transformed into a higher-value circular product.

During the visit, we shared the story behind Staramaki: our work with farmers in Kilkis, our production process, our sustainability mission, and our effort to connect circular economy, rural development and innovation in practice.

It is always inspiring to open our doors to young people studying the future of agri-food, sustainability and entrepreneurship. Their questions, curiosity and fresh perspective remind us why education, research and real production must stay closely connected.

Thank you to Perrotis College, the Αμερικανική Γεωργική Σχολή of Thessaloniki, the professors, the group leader and the students from UGA for visiting us today.

From the field, to the factory, to the glass.
This is where circular economy becomes tangible.
