When it comes to periods, there’s a whole lot to talk about. Even in 2021, UNICEF estimates that millions of girls, women, and menstruators of all genders do not have the information or resources to manage their monthly cycle in a dignified, healthy way. Period inequities that exist around the world are often a direct result of period stigma — and the best way to create change for the next generation is to use your voice to normalize menstruation, stop the spread of dangerous misinformation and help menstruators feel confident about their periods.

In the most general sense, period stigma is the discrimination faced by people who menstruate. Across the globe, this manifests in many ways, ranging from lighthearted jokes to negative assumptions and dehumanization.

Period poverty is an important, yet often overlooked public health crisis that occurs both in the United States and abroad. The consequences of period poverty are dire; from keeping girls out of school to negatively impacting their physical and emotional health.

Periods should be celebrated
Our menstrual cycles are the way our bodies produce hormones for our physical and mental health, AND our period symptoms can give us signs to tell us about what’s happening inside our body that we can’t see. When you tune into your body, this is so helpful!
⠀⠀
💕 Here are a few reasons to celebrate and appreciate our bodies! 💕
⠀⠀
- The female egg is the LARGEST cell in the human body!
- Your ovaries house ALL the eggs you will ever have when you are born!
- Your ovaries talk to your brain to keep your period regular!
- If you’re stressed or in prolonged danger, your body will press “pause” on your period in order to divert energy elsewhere to keep you safe!
- Your brain tells your ovaries when to release hormones that will cause ovulation to happen!
- Your uterus is an organ and it expands up to 5x its size during pregnancy!
- You have on average 400+ periods in a lifetime! You lose all that blood and you’re still alive! You’re a superhero

What else should be on this list!?
There’s so much more to include!

When we started the Period Box, two of our goals that always remain constant are eliminating period stigma, and reducing and spreading awareness of period poverty.
This month, we are so grateful and honored to have partnered with some truly amazing people to keep making those goals a reality.

The Period Box and German’s Restaurant partnered with the Sonia Noel Foundation for Creative Arts (SNFCA) and Iwokrama International Center for Rain Forest Conservation & Development. We sponsored 20 period boxes filled with essentials for menstrual hygiene and comfort, and self-care items that are mood-boosting during their cycle. Girls aged 13 – 19, from Region 8 received the boxes, as well as reproductive health education.

Development activities and partnerships like these are so impactful and empowering to the young women we reach because we’re able to tackle the issues they face from multiple angles and sources. Starting the conversation on periods and reproductive health not only educates, but also makes it a feel like a comfortable, normal topic – thereby reducing stigma. Menstrual hygiene products are a basic necessity that many women still don’t have access to or can easily afford.

Sponsoring period boxes can help reduce period poverty to some extent, but more importantly, it raises awareness so that we can find effective, more permanent solutions.
