These are among the most commonly used Eucalyptus oils in aromatherapy. E. radiata is sometimes said to be “gentler” than E. globulus. It does have a little less 1,8-cineole and has a pleasanter, softer odor, but the difference in terms of safety is almost negligible. Both oils are of course wonderful to use in respiratory infections.
Corymbia citriodora is the more correct name for E. citrodora, but that would not look so good in our infographic! I feel the potential of this oil is sometimes underestimated. As well as being a useful insect repellent, it is an effective remedy for fungal skin infections (pleasanter than Tea Tree, and works well with it – use at up to 5%), and is also one of the best oils for muscle pain.
Not very much is known about E. dives and piperitone, but we do know that it’s a relatively safe molecule. There are other commercially produced Eucalyptus oils, most of them rich in 1,8-cineole like E. globulus and E. radiata. But there are also species with a high content of molecules such as limonene, citral, geranyl acetate and cryptone.

Starting out the new year, I want to start by covering five points this week that I would argue those just starting in essential oils or aromatherapy should understand as they move forward in learning.
So, that being said, point 1:
It's more accurate to think of essential oils as "nature-derived" than completely "natural." In most cases.
With the exception of perhaps pressed citrus oils, all essential oils undergo changes during distillation. The most obvious example we can give of this is shown in your blue essential oils. The chamazulene, the constituent that gives oils like German chamomile and blue tansy that deep blue tint, doesn't occur naturally in the plant and is instead synthesized during distillation.
Why is this important? Well, mainly because of two common arguments we see as justification for ignoring that you do need to exercise caution using essential oils. And these arguments are often what newbies to all things aromatics are confronted with when they start looking into what essential oils have to offer.
Argument 1: Essential Oils are natural and therefore harmless or “better” than unnatural substances.
This is a common logical fallacy that pervades aromatherapy and essential oil communities. As has been discussed in the past, toxic substances occur naturally - like cyanide. All sorts of natural substances can cause harm, depending on how they are used or how much is used. So, the idea that essential oils are automatically harmless because they are “natural” holds no merit.
Argument 2: Essential oils were given to us by (deity of choice), so they are good for us.
Well, again, cyanide. But when we consider the point of this post - that essential oils are not entirely natural - this argument also begins to fall apart. If the premise is false, your conclusion doesn’t hold up the way you think it does.
Does this mean essential oils are bad? Of course not. But like with anything, they need to be used responsibly. And part of using them responsibly means understanding what they are and not defining them as something they’re not. And it especially means not using misunderstandings about what they are to define why we use them certain ways and why we think that’s okay.
So, natural? Eh. Nature-derived? Safe to say. But regardless, natural doesn’t automatically mean better or safer. And since we know plant components undergo chemical changes during distillation to give us the essential oils we all know and love, this is the one of the first things I think people should understand when starting out. It sets the foundation and prepares the new learner to critically approach many of the claims that are sure to come their way in their learning journey.
