Hong Kong is set to raise its 2026 GDP forecast after the economy grew 5.1% in the first half, outperforming expectations. Finance Minister Paul Chan said strong AI-related exports, resilient financial services, and rising tourism will support growth. The stock market and IPO fundraising have also rebounded significantly. Hong Kong is accelerating efforts to internationalize the renminbi with the launch of Chinese government bond futures. The move strengthens the offshore RMB market and attracts foreign investors. Despite geopolitical and US interest-rate risks, analysts expect full-year GDP to reach 4%.

🌸 Lotus 101: A Culinary Guide to Lotus in Thai Cuisine
Few plants move so naturally between the temple, the pond, and the dining table as the lotus. 🪷
In Thailand, the lotus is widely recognised as a symbol of purity, faith, and spiritual growth.
What makes the lotus remarkable in the Thai cuisine is that almost every part of it is edible.
This guide explores the lotus from flower to underground stem, pairing each part with dishes that showcase it at its best. 🌿🍽️
1. Lotus Petals — Kleep Bua 🌸
Soft, delicate, and naturally elegant, lotus petals are perhaps the most visually striking part of the plant used in Thai cuisine. Their gentle shape allows them to function as edible wrappers for bite-sized appetisers. They may also be used as garnishes or infused into water and syrup to add a subtle floral character.
🥜🌿 One of the best-known examples is “Miang Kham Bua Luang”, an elegant variation of the classic one-bite snack. Here a lotus petal replaces the usual wild betel leaf, cradling a mix of Thai herbs, roasted coconut, peanuts, dried shrimp, and a sweet-savoury tamarind sauce.
🫖 Lotus petals may also be used to prepare “Nam Kleep Bua”, a light floral drink made by gently infusing the petals in water. Depending on the recipe, pandan leaves, jasmine, or a small amount of sugar may be added, although the lotus aroma is usually kept subtle rather than heavily perfumed.
2. Lotus Runners — Lai Bua 🌱
Lai bua, sometimes called lotus runners or young lotus shoots in English, are crisp,
juicy, and mild, they are commonly treated as a vegetable in Thai cooking.
🍲 A classic way to enjoy them is “Kaeng Som Lai Bua”, a Thai sour curry in which crisp lotus shoots absorb the flavour of tamarind, chilli paste, shrimp paste, and seafood while still retaining their bite
🥗 Another increasingly popular preparation is “Som Tam Lai Bua”. A spicy Thai salad built on crisp young lotus runners, pounded with lime, chilli, and palm sugar for a fresh, crunchy twist on the familiar som tum.
3. Lotus Seeds — Met Bua 🫘
Fresh lotus seeds are crisp, faintly sweet, and nutty — pleasant enough to snack on straight from the seed pod. Cooked, they turn soft and floury, absorbing sweetness beautifully, which is why they appear so often in warm and chilled Thai-Chinese sweet soups.
🥮 A familiar festive example is the “Lotus Seed Mooncake”, filled with a smooth paste made by cooking and grinding lotus seeds with sugar and oil.
🫖 Lotus seeds may also be prepared as Lotus Seed Tea. A mild, soothing tea brewed from whole lotus seeds or from the bitter lotus-seed hearts, long valued as a bedtime drink.
4. Lotus Stamens — Keson Bua ✨
The fine golden stamens at the heart of the flower carry a delicate floral fragrance, valued more for their aroma than for a pronounced flavour.
🫖 Keson Bua Tea is one of the simplest ways to appreciate this ingredient. The dried stamens are steeped in hot water, sometimes with jasmine, pandan, or other aromatic flowers.
🥗 In contemporary Thai cooking, lotus stamens may also appear in creative yam-style preparations such as Yam Keson Bua, paired with herbs and a bright lime-and-chilli dressing.
5. Lotus Root — Rak Bua 🪷
Lotus root has a crisp texture and a mildly sweet taste and is a good source of dietary fibre. Sliced crosswise, the lotus root reveals the lace-like pattern of holes that has made it a decorative favourite across Asia.
🥤 “Nam Rak Bua”, this refreshing drink is commonly prepared by simmering sliced lotus root with water, sugar, and sometimes pandan leaves. It may be served warm, chilled, or over ice.
🇨🇳 Lotus root can also be included in Tao Teung, a Chinese-Thai sweet soup contained with grains, beans, dried fruits, and slices of lotus root, sweetened with longan syrup.
6. Lotus Leaves — Bai Bua
Unlike the seeds, shoots, or rhizomes, lotus leaves are generally valued less for their texture than for their function and aroma. Cooks use them to wrap and steam food, and also
simply to serve — an aromatic, beautiful, and entirely compostable alternative to the plate.
🍃 The best-known example is “Khao Hor Bai Bua”, or rice wrapped in lotus leaf. Recipes vary, but the filling may include seasoned rice, chicken or pork, mushrooms, Chinese sausage, salted egg yolk, lotus seeds, ginkgo nuts, dried shrimp, or chestnuts. The parcel is wrapped securely and steamed until the flavours come together.
🍗 “Chicken Wrapped in Lotus Leaf” follows a similar principle. Marinated chicken is combined with aromatic ingredients, wrapped in a softened lotus leaf, and steamed until tender.
From flower to leaf and from seed to underground shoot, the lotus is a reminder that Thai cuisine often looks beyond the obvious—discovering flavour, fragrance, texture, and purpose in nearly every part of the natural world. 🌸🌿✨
