Laboratory studies have found that compounds found in extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), rather than EVOO itself simply acting as a cancer treatment, can kill or inhibit several types of cancer cells grown in the lab.
These compoundsāparticularly oleocanthal, hydroxytyrosol and oleuropeināhave been studied in cancer cell lines including breast, prostate, pancreatic, colorectal, liver, stomach, leukemia, melanoma, lung, thyroid, ovarian, cervical and brain cancers. Different studies tested different compounds, extracts, concentrations and cancer cell lines, so it is not accurate to say that one experiment proved EVOO kills exactly 13 types of cancer.
One of the most studied compounds is oleocanthal, a natural phenolic compound present in extra virgin olive oil.
Laboratory research has shown that oleocanthal can damage the lysosomes, structures inside cells that contain digestive enzymes, causing cancer cells to die. Other olive-oil compounds have been reported to interfere with cancer-cell growth and survival pathways or trigger programmed cell death.

L4 Sensory Mapping & Dermatome Maps: The Nerve Sensation Pattern You Should Knowš¦µšš¦¶ā
Ever wonder why you can get numbness, tingling, or burning in such a specific spot on your leg when thereās a problem with just one spinal nerve? Thatās all about dermatomes.
The L4 nerve root sits in your lower back and handles a lot of feeling and movement down your leg. If you can picture the typical L4 sensory area, you start to understand why weird symptoms show up in the front and inner side of your lower leg, especially near the knee and ankle.
But hereās the thingādermatome maps are rough sketches, not perfect blueprints. Sensory territories can blur together, and peopleās symptoms donāt always line up with the classic diagrams.
Letās break down how the L4 sensory map really works.
Whatās a Dermatome, Anyway?
Think of a dermatome as a patch of skin wired up to a specific spinal nerve root.
Your spinal cord sends out nerves all over your body. In your lower back (the lumbar spine), these nerve roots handle what you feel and how you move your legs.
Doctors use dermatome maps as clues in figuring out which nerve root is acting up.
For example:
- L2: Upper front thigh
- L3: Front and inner thigh, around the knee
- L4: Medial knee and inner lower leg
- L5: Outer lower leg, top of your foot
- S1: Back and side of the lower leg, and outer foot
But honestly, these borders are fuzzy and can overlap quite a bit.
What Does the L4 Sensory Pattern Look Like?
The L4 dermatome covers the:
- Front and inner side of your knee
- Inner side of the lower leg
- Inside part of the ankle
But everyoneās a little different.
If youāve got an irritated L4 nerve root, you might feel:
- Numbness
- Tingling or āpins and needlesā
- Burning
- Skin sensitivity changes
- Electric or shooting pain
But donāt jump to conclusionsājust because you feel these things doesnāt automatically mean itās all about L4. Other nerves and even joint or soft tissue issues can make similar symptoms.
Why Does L4 Matter?
L4 controls both feeling (sensation) and muscle movement.
The sensory fibers tell your brain what youāre touching or if something hurts. The motor side helps your muscles move.
So, problems here donāt just mess with sensation. You might also feel weak in movements that use L4, like straightening your kneeābecause your quadriceps need input from the femoral nerve and a few lumbar nerves.
Doctors also check your knee-jerk (patellar) reflex to see if L4 is working right.
All in all, health pros look at the whole picture instead of just trusting a dermatome map.
L4 Dermatome vs. Peripheral NerveāWhatās the Difference?
Hereās where it gets tricky.
A dermatome is linked to one spinal nerve root.
A peripheral nerveālike the femoral nerveāgets fibers from several spinal nerve roots. So, feeling something weird in your inner leg doesnāt guarantee itās just L4. That areaās covered by more than one nerve root.
Thatās why doctors use a mix of tools:
- Neurological exams
- Symptom history
- Muscle strength testing
- Reflex checks
- Sensory testing
- Imaging, if they need it
This helps them figure out whatās really going on.
What Causes L4-Type Symptoms?
Lots of things can irritate the nerves in your lumbar spine.
A herniated disc is a common culprit. A bulging or slipped disc can squeeze a nerve root. Bone spurs, arthritis, or even spinal narrowing (stenosis) can crowd the nerve, too.
But hereās a twist: Just because something looks off on a scan doesnāt always mean youāll feel symptoms. Plenty of people have changes on MRI and feel perfectly fine.
So, doctors listen to your symptoms and do a proper exam before making any decisions.
L4 Symptoms Arenāt Always Perfectly āL4ā
Hereās why you canāt trust those color-coded dermatome charts online.
Real human bodies arenāt that predictable. Dermatomes:
- Overlap each other
- Look different from person to person
- Blend with neighboring nerve roots
- Create symptoms that donāt always match the drawings
You might feel changes covering more than one territory at once, especially if multiple nerves are involved.
And pain sometimes travels from joints or musclesānot just nervesāso it doesnāt always follow the āmap.ā
In short, treat a dermatome map like a set of training wheels, not a DIY diagnosis tool.
L4 vs L5 vs S1: A Quick Comparison
It helps to know where each dermatome generally sits:
- L4: Inner knee, inner lower leg, maybe toward the inner ankle
- L5: Outer lower leg, top of foot, area near the big toe
- S1: Back/side of lower leg, outer part of the foot
These are guidelines, not strict linesālots of overlap can happen, especially with multiple nerve issues.
Movement Matters, Too
Sensory symptoms are just part of the story. If a nerve root really gets pinched, you might get muscle weakness.
With L4, doctors look at your quadriceps (think straightening your knee) and other L4-driven movements. They'll check reflexes and compare sensation side-to-side, which can reveal differences that simple ānumb or notā questions miss.

The L4 dermatome usually covers the inner knee, inside of the lower leg, and inner ankle.
