“A MESSY ROOM, A HOME FOR MOSQUITOES.”

One day, Christy was happily playing in her room with her friends named Yana, Caecil, and Tania. Christy’s room was very messy. Many things were scattered on the bed and the floor. Her mother had reminded Christy many times to tidy up her room, but she ignored it.
While they were having fun chatting, suddenly mosquitoes came and bit their hands and feet. One of her friends, Yana, slapped the mosquito that bit her hand very hard. There was a little blood on her hand, so she was shocked and screamed.
Christy’s mother came and asked what had happened. Christy answered in an annoyed tone, “There are many mosquitoes in my room, Mom. Yana was bitten by a mosquito.”
Hearing Christy’s complaint, her mother scolded her, “That’s because your room is dirty and messy. I have already told you to always keep your room clean.”
Besides Christy’s room, the yard beside her window was also very dirty. Her mother then asked, “Christy, who threw candy wrappers, drink cans, and biscuit wrappers under your bedroom window?”
Christy answered while looking down, “My friends and I did, Mom.”
Her mother sighed and explained, “You should not throw trash carelessly. Mosquitoes like to hide in dark places and breed there. They can hide in hanging clothes and scattered items. Mosquito bites can cause a disease called Dengue Fever. The mosquito that spreads it is called Aedes aegypti. Dengue fever is transmitted by adult mosquitoes. Mosquitoes lay eggs, and within two days the eggs become larvae. You can see mosquito larvae in bathtubs or in clean standing water. Do you understand what I explained?”
All four of them answered together, “Yes, Mom.”
“Mom, what are the symptoms of Dengue Fever?” Christy asked.
Her mother replied, “The symptoms of Dengue Fever include sudden high fever, fever that comes and goes, red spots on the skin, chest tightness, and nosebleeds.”
“Ewww, that’s scary!” shouted Christy and her friends.
“Don’t be afraid. We can prevent it,” said her mother.
“How can we do that, Mom?” asked Caecil.
Christy’s mother explained that Dengue Fever can be prevented by doing the 3M steps, which are:
1. Covering water storage containers.
2. Cleaning and draining places that hold water.
3. Burying trash that can collect standing water.
In addition, we must keep our rooms clean so they do not become places where mosquitoes can breed.
Dengue fever can be prevented by maintaining cleanliness and good health.
