in 1485, Catherine of Aragon was born at the Archiepiscopal Palace of Alcalá de Henares, Spain.

Catherine was the youngest surviving child of King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella I of Castile.

In 1501, Catherine married Arthur, Prince of Wales at Old St Paul’s Cathedral. Arthur was the son and heir of Henry VII and brother of Henry, Duke of York, later Henry VIII. Arthur died a few months later of sweating sickness.

In 1509, Catherine married Henry who had ascended the English throne after his father. Catherine had several pregnancies, however, only one child survived into adulthood, Mary.

Due to Catherine’s earlier marriage to Arthur, Henry began to believe his marriage was cursed as he and Catherine had had several pregnancies but Catherine had miscarried all but one, a daughter, and Henry wanted a son to secure the Tudor line of succession. However, the Pope refused to annul the marriage, therefore, Henry sought to divorce Catherine.

To divorce Catherine, Henry split from Rome and the Catholic Church. Catherine was moved from several castles around England and officially referred to as the Dowager Princess of Wales, in reference to her marriage to Arthur.

Until the end of her life, Catherine would refer to herself as Henry's only lawful wedded wife and England's only rightful queen, and her servants continued to address her as such.

Happy birthday to James, Viscount Severn who was born in 2007 at Frimley Park Hospital in Frimley, Surrey 🥳

Viscount Severn is the youngest child of The Earl and Countess of Wessex. Through his father, James is a grandson of Elizabeth II.

James was baptised in the Private Chapel, Windsor by the Dean of Windsor, David Conner, on 19th April 2008. James was the first royal to wear the replica christening gown in efforts to preserve the original gown worn by Princess Victoria and most royals since 1840.

Under Letters Patent 1917, James is legally Prince James of Wessex and styled as His Royal Highness. However, The Earl and Countess of Wessex chose to style their children as those of an Earl as opposed to a son of the monarch.

James turns 14 today 🎈
