Tanning, whether from natural sunlight or artificial sources like tanning beds, increases melanin production in the skin, making it darker. Laser devices used in hair removal are designed to target melanin in the hair follicles. When the skin is tanned, the laser may not distinguish effectively between the melanin in the skin and the hair, leading to a higher risk of burns, hyperpigmentation, or hypopigmentation. This is why we refuse to treat you if you are tanned while undergoing laser hair removal treatments. It’s generally recommended to avoid sun exposure and tanning for at least six weeks before and after the procedure.
