An Open Letter to The Garda Commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan

Nóirín,

We knew this day would come eventually.

We need to talk about beards.

Now, I know you deem this conversation as trivial, but please let me explain.

Your fellow gardaí (The Garda Representative Association) have expressed their desire to change section 7.2 of the Garda Síochána Code that prohibits gardaí to naturally and freely express their beard in the force.

I would encourage you to support your fellow members in their desire to rightly grow their beards.

Here’s why?

The benefits of having a beard are endless.

1. It allows gardaí to feel more comfortable in themselves, yet more approachable and cuddly to the passerby.

2. It means time saved in the morning from shaving.

3. It means an extra layer of protection against the cold in the winter and uv rays in the summer.

All this leads to a happy garda. 👮

Let's be honest Nóirín we can both agree that shaving in the morning is sickening, you begrudgingly start the day on the wrong foot and this leads to an angry garda. 😡

On a serious note;

The policies governing beards are outdated and inappropriate in today's modern world. Gardaí should have the right to decide if they want to grow a beard or not.

The policy in it’s current form allows for sideburns and mustaches but not beards.

Let’s go all the way Nóirín and end this discrimination against the beard. Sure there’s only a small bit left to fill in between the stache and the sideburns.

Now I know there’s an exception to the rule currently that says, if a member of the force has a medical condition and they are unable to shave as a result then and only then can a garda grow a beard.

It shouldn’t be the case that a garda has to have a skin condition to allow for the growth of a beard.

Every garda should have the right to let their beard grow freely, but not too freely as I know you may deem this unprofessional but we are willing to compromise to it being tamed and groomed.

You may argue that beards are seen to be unprofessional, you may also suggest that it would negatively impact on their job.

I would argue that allowing your fellow garda to grow his/her beard would lead to a happier more productive garda and that I hope we can agree on, is good for everyone concerned.

The thing is Nóirín, growing facial hair is just as natural as milk in a cup of tae or a tayto sandwich for lunch.

Growing a beard means expressing yourself.

If it leads to your staff being genuinely happier and more comfortable in their own skin, isn’t that a good thing?

The Gardaí need to move into the 21st century and this is a small step in the right direction.

Let your force protect and serve with class and distinction.

It may even grow on you,

Your bearded beloved,

The Rugged Man
