Beautiful piece of Irish bog yew- wood from a tree that once formed part of the ancient forests covering Ireland thousands of years ago. A silent witness to the events of the Neolithic period.
The wood is inlaid with bronze and iron, with the discovery of bronze dating back to around the same era as the tree itself.
Three shaving brushes are going live this Saturday 18/4/26 at 7pm Irish time.
Ancient Irish bog oak, yew and Dunfierth chestnut. Some, great historic materials. All made for 26mm Gelously super high density two band knots from Ap Shave.
Ancient Irish bog yew with iron and brass inlays. The wood is very rare and approximately the same age as the design on the base of the handle. The design comes from a stone carving on the walls of Newgrange, a 5,200-year-old passage tomb in the Boyne Valley.
Irish bog yew is a rare and ancient wood, sourced from yew trees that fell into Irish bogs thousands of years ago. These trees were once part of gigantic forests that covered Ireland.
Great, historic material. That's what I like.

Preparing my favourite wood, Ancient Irish bog oak, for the resin stabilisation process. It’s a great feeling to hold in your hands a piece of something that was alive thousands of years ago. From a time when people were building their first great monuments, Newgrange in Ireland and Stonehenge in the UK.

Few words about Dunfierth.
Dunfierth Church and graveyard in County Kildare was built around 1500 and served the local parish for centuries. It holds the tomb of Walter de Bermingham (1548), set within its ruins, and later became part of the Hamilton family vault in 1815.
I was fortunate to meet the owners of the farm beside Dunfierth Church, Pat and Carmel (thank you so much for everything!) . They kindly allowed me to use some wood from a fallen horse chestnut that grew near the ruins. The wood has a beautiful grain, as you might have seen on the handles I’ve made before. Very interesting material and pleasure to use.
