Did you know burdock inspired Velcro? 🌿

In 1941, Swiss engineer George de Mestral noticed burrs clinging to his clothes and his dog after being out in the countryside.

Instead of simply brushing them off, he became curious about how they worked - and that observation eventually inspired the hook-and-loop fastening system we know as Velcro.

I love stories like this. Nature has so much to show us when we take the time to notice. 🌿✨

And this wonderful plant is burdock.

🌿🔥 One more fascinating thing about mullein…

There’s another part of mullein’s story that I absolutely love.

Once the flowers and seed heads have finished and the tall stalk has completely dried, mullein stalks were traditionally coated in wax or fat and used as torches.

The dried stalk could be dipped several times and then burned as a source of outdoor light. 🔥

Isn’t that fabulous?

I love how plants can hold so much history - not only in how they were used as herbs, but also in the practical ways people worked with them in everyday life.

Mullein really is one of my favourites. 🌿

🌿 Mullein - one of my favourite plants

Mullein has a long history of traditional herbal use, and it’s one of those plants I’ve always loved working with.

In this first part, I’m sharing a little about the leaves — how I harvest and dry them and some of the ways mullein has traditionally been prepared.

The leaves have traditionally been used in herbal practice as a soothing herb for the respiratory system, particularly during times of coughs, congestion or an irritated throat.

Once harvested, I dry the leaves thoroughly until they are completely crisp. They can then traditionally be prepared as a herbal tea or tincture.

🌿 A little preparation note:
Mullein leaves have very fine hairs, so tea should be strained very thoroughly before drinking.

And as I always say with herbs - take your time to learn about the plant, use reliable herbal references and make sure you understand how it should be identified and prepared.

Elderberry season ✨

One of my favourite things about this time of year is seeing what’s growing all around us.

Elderberries are one of those wonderful late-summer treasures, and I thought I’d share a little about them with you today.

There’s always something interesting to discover in the hedgerows 🌿

A little pot of magic ✨🌿

I first made my Multipurpose Herbal Restorative Balm around 10 years ago, combining my knowledge of herbs with intuition and Reiki intention.

I knew the herbs I wanted to use, I knew what I wanted to create, and I trusted that.

Ten years later, this little pot is still going strong - and I’m so grateful for all the wonderful stories people have shared with me over the years and for everyone who comes back for another pot. 💜
