A quick ingredient guide: retinoids such as retinol, retinal and tretinoin, as well as hydroquinone, are generally best avoided during pregnancy. Instead, look for gentle ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, ceramides, niacinamide, vitamin C and azelaic acid, which can help support hydration, the skin barrier, brightness and breakouts. If you’re unsure about a particular active or prescription product, always check with your doctor, pharmacist or midwife.
