An interview with Olivia Keenan herself where she answers important questions and shares some invaluable advice ❤️

Q1 Where did you train?
A. At the Betty Whelan School of Beauty in Dublin (purposely leaving out what year!)

Q2 Did you always want to have your own business?
A. Yes but I knew I needed to work in salons to gain experience before taking the leap

Q3 What is your favourite treatment?
A. I love anything to do with skin but if I have to choose one, it would be electrolysis for the removal of skin blemishes. I love the instant result and the client's reaction when they see the skin issue immediately removed

Q4 What is the biggest skin issue you come across?
A. Sensitised areas on the skin specifically the cheeks and sun damage. It's imperative to protect the skin by using an SPF

Q5 What has been your most successful treatment in the salon?
A. IPL Hair Removal, unwanted facial hair is a lot more common in women than most would think. I always remind first time clients, their unwanted facial hair concern is not abnormal, they are not the only one.

Q6 What do you find most frustrating about the beauty industry?
A. Oh that's easy, there's an overall lack of regulation in the beauty industry. Basic beauty training is centered on client care and health and safety but outside of training, no therapist or business is monitored outside of insurance regulations. It would be great to see an organisation with health and safety inspectors doing spot checks to ensure high level standards are continually practiced.

Q7 Is there any treatment you would never offer in your salon?
A. Yes, teeth whitening and injectables. Anything to do with teeth should be carried out by a dentist and injectables such as hyaluronic acid should be carried out by a professional medic.

Q8 How would you describe the beauty industry right now?
A. It's more competitive than its ever been but I do see a shift in the different aspects of Beauty. Skincare, makeup and nails have made distinct seperations and are very much individual subsections and complementary therapies have also formed another branch. I guess you could say the only business type which incorporate all as part of their structure are spas.

Q9 What is the most important advice you would like to share right now?
A. It would have to be, protect your skin, wear an SPF everyday, preferably a factor 50. It is the number 1 product type we sell to our clients and for good reason. Overexposure to UV rays can create sensitivity, sun damage, premature ageing and most concerning of all, skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in Ireland and using an SPF daily can significantly decrease chances. It is much easier to prevent than reverse!

Q10 Any final words?
A. You only have one face, the face you show the world. You can get a new hair style, buy a new outfit but you can not buy a new face. Protect and love what you have.
