✂️✂️✂️Alfie’s Barber Shop - The Final Cut ✂️✂️✂️
It is with a real tinge of sadness that we post this tribute to a genuine Sligo Institution which has announced in the last couple of days that they have decided to call it a day after almost 50 years of Trimming on Thomas Street in Sligo!!
Literally thousands of Sligo men have lifetime memories of milestone visits to Alfie’s Barber Shop, most starting way back for their first haircut as a toddler with Alfie & Mary ready to supply the necessary sweets if all hell broke loose after your first sit in the big chair.......the annual important tidy up before back to school in September........the Holy Communion haircut......a few years later it was time for the Confirmation cut, closely followed by a more trendy trim for the big start in Summerhill College!!
Then you had the stylish cut before the first teenage disco.......the trip in for the leaving cert Grad cut and maybe a hot towel shave if you were lucky enough to have had a few hairs on your face by that stage!!
The years rolled by and it was back in to Alfie & team you went for the necessary sharpening up before the first big interview.........Alfie had you looking your best when you went down on a trembling knee to pop the big question.........and even better as you stood at the top of the aisle waiting for herself!!
“Can you do anything about the grey hairs Alfie” was the request after the first few years of marriage!!!
And then, many moons on from your own first visit, the cycle started again, back in with your own young fella for the first chop!!
Whatever the occasion was, Alfie, Mary and their loyal team of staff were always on hand to have you leaving looking your best with a good chat and plenty of banter in between!!
Well done to Alfie & Mary on almost 50 years of successful business and bringing the personal touch to the customer every single day, an unbelievable achievement which has cemented a place in Sligo town folklore for a long time to come!!
Here’s to a long and happy retirement 🙏 🎉

We’ll be back barbering when we can folks. For now keep safe, and keep social distancing.
Worst day of my life - Sligo hairdresser says lay-off decision was horrendous - Ocean FM The proprietor of Alfie’s The Barber Shop in Sligo has said the decision to lay off workers due to coronavirus has been horrendous. Alfie Mahon says he also can’t understand why hairdressers have been forced to close while politicians and TV presenters appear to be having their hair groomed on a...
Dear customers,
Alfies, The Barbershop is closed until further notice due to the Covid-19 crisis. We have taken this decision for the safety of our staff and customers. This is a very difficult time for the Sligo business community. In nearly 50 years of business in Alfie’s, we have never experienced a public health crisis like this. So it’s essential to heed the advice and stay at home. Be well and stay safe, Alfie & Mary.
