Anti-wrinkle treatment works more like a dimmer switch than an on-off switch. If you’re medically suitable and you want to consider treatment, it will start to work in 1-3 days, your full result will be at 2 weeks, and it will stay at about the same level for 4-6 weeks. Then as the medication wears off, the muscle activity and skin creasing will increase back towards your pre-treatment appearance. By 3-4 months, you’ll be back at about baseline and can choose to repeat treatment if you wish. The vast majority of us want a subtle result, and we have to trade off the fact that this doesn’t last as long when compared to someone who wants a stronger result. These medicines are dose-dependent; so the more you put in, the stronger the result and the longer the duration. The duration and result is pretty consistent for frown lines between the brows. We have to be particularly careful when treating the forehead as the brows flatten over time and our only brow lifters ( elevators) are the same muscles that create the forehead lines. If we put in a high dose on the forehead, we risk a heavy feeling or dropping brows, where it’s hard to put on eyeshadow or mascara- so we want to avoid that at all costs! Treating crows feet lines becomes more complex over time too, as the delicate skin around the eyes picks up sun damage, the fat and bone is changing and you are aiming for a ‘softening’ of movement and lines, and can’t correct all changes. At an optional 2-3 week review we can add more, but we can’t take the medicine out! In Ireland, botulinum toxin (anti-wrinkle) is a prescription-only medication and you must see a medical doctor or dentist ( licenced to practice in Ireland), for a face to face consultation to assess you for suitability.
