Dark under-eyes don’t always mean you need an injectable treatment.

Sometimes, the darkness comes from increased pigmentation or melanin in the skin. Genetics, sun exposure, frequent rubbing of the eyes, allergies and certain skin conditions can all contribute to under-eye pigmentation.

And this is where the diagnosis matters. If pigmentation is the main concern, putting filler underneath the eyes won’t necessarily make the skin lighter. The treatment needs to address the actual cause—whether that means appropriate skincare, sun protection, managing allergies or treating an underlying skin condition.

But dark circles can have multiple causes. Pigmentation, hollowness, shadows from the facial anatomy, visible blood vessels or a combination can all create a darker-looking under-eye.

“What is actually causing my dark circles?”

Because the right treatment starts with understanding the problem—not simply adding volume.

Puffy under-eyes and hollow under-eyes are not the same thing.

This is one of the most important distinctions when evaluating the lower eyelid.

An eye bag usually appears as a fullness or bulge beneath the eye, often because the fat compartments around the eye become more prominent with age or because the supporting tissues become weaker.

A hollow, on the other hand, is an area where there is a visible depression or loss of volume.

Why does this matter?

Because adding filler is essentially adding volume. If the main problem is already-existing fullness or protruding fat, adding more volume may not give the desired correction and can sometimes make the area look heavier.
