1) Get Focused
Pay attention to every word your teacher says. This focused single idea will shift the focus away from you. If your initial strategy is to pay the utmost attention, it will also keep your mind off others who are in class and therefore, it’s less likely you’ll be distracted.
By paying close attention to the directions and words of an experienced teacher, you will breathe deeply the breath of life and reap the single most important benefit of yoga for both the short and long term: intentional connection with your breath.
2) Follow The Rules
Follow the guidelines of the studio. Many yoga studio’s post their rules and regulations in a public place. Rules are posted to help everyone sharing a space cooperate with one another, when there are a variety of needs and norms that need to be met simultaneously. Rules and regulations help form a standard behavior that may not appeal to everyone, but aim to limit chaos and unbalanced inconvenience.
While the cosmic and essential philosophy of yoga may be a union with God and dissolution of all boundaries and borders, the people you meet will have boundaries and borders. It would be wise to respect them. Furthermore, be mindful of your own boundaries.
In any setting, all of us have a right to always – respectfully, yet firmly – speak and enforce our truth. You will likely find that all your worrying and anxiety was pointless.
4) Let Go Of Expectations
Release expectations of yourself, your teacher, and other people in class. In yoga, you might hear that nobody is there to judge you and I think that’s true. But, people do evaluate you. Your teachers evaluate you because they want to know where you are in your practice and figure out how best to help you. They evaluate me too; it’s just the way humans are, but there’s no need to worry because whether you’re a first-timer or a veteran, evaluation won’t hurt you but the coaching will help you.
5) Have Fun
Enjoy yourself, smile at those around you, and remember names. You are part of a group, and the way to make your group experience positive for you is to enjoy it and make a connection with others to the best of your abilities. Even if you only remember the name of your teacher, that’s one person you can call by name the next time you attend a class. Using someone’s name when you greet them is music to their ears and it doesn’t take you much effort. There’s a good chance they will remember you too and in the next class you’ll no longer be a stranger. If you’d like, you can create respectful relationships with other yogis in the studio. After all, they are just like you, doing yoga to jumpstart their journey to wholeness and health.
6) Introspect
Finally, evaluate and accept your experience. Figure out how yoga has changed and is changing your life. Ask yourself if you want more. Your answer only matters to you. However, if you do decide to return, then do so and continue paying attention, following the guidelines, experimenting, releasing expectations, and having fun.
If you continue yoga, chances are good you’ll experience a gradual change – maybe even a life transformation – that while unexplainable, will never be fully realized or accomplished. Yet, even learning to accept the incomplete nature of your life and practice is itself yoga. Trust that it’s working its healing energy on and within you.
