Is Azelaic Acid really the right choice for your skin? 👀

Azelaic Acid can help with acne, pigmentation and post-acne marks, but it isn’t a one-size-fits-all ingredient. Your skin type, concern, sensitivity and even pregnancy can affect whether it’s suitable for you.

Before adding it to your routine, know when to use it, who it’s recommended for and when you may need to be more cautious.

📌Save this for your next skincare check!

Confused about what’s actually safe for sensitive skin? Here’s a dermatologist-approved guide on what to use and what to avoid 👇

Cleanser
❌ Garnier Bright Complete Vitamin C Cleanser: Can be too harsh for sensitive skin and may cause dryness or irritation.
✅ La Roche-Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Cleanser: Gentle, hydrating and designed to support sensitive skin.

Toner
❌ Plum Green Tea Alcohol-Free Toner: Fragrance and botanical ingredients may irritate some sensitive skin types.
✅ Bioderma Sensibio Tonique: A gentle, soothing formula made specifically for sensitive skin.

Serum
❌ Garnier Bright Complete Vitamin C Booster Serum: Brightening actives may trigger irritation when the skin barrier is sensitive.
✅ Aveeno Calm+ Restore Triple Oat Face Serum: Helps soothe and support the skin barrier with a gentle oat-based formula.

Moisturizer
❌ Pond’s Super Light Gel: Its lightweight formula may not provide enough barrier support for sensitive or irritated skin.
✅ Physiogel AI Cream: Helps moisturize and support the skin barrier, making it a better choice for sensitive skin.

Sunscreen
❌ Mamaearth Ultra Light Indian Sunscreen SPF 50: Some sensitive skin types may experience stinging or irritation.
✅ UV Doux Silicone Sunscreen SPF 50: A comfortable silicone-based sunscreen that can work well for sensitive skin.

Exfoliant
❌ Everyuth Naturals Exfoliating Walnut Scrub: Physical scrubbing can cause irritation and worsen sensitivity.
✅ Dermatica GL Complex Cream: A chemical exfoliant that offers more controlled exfoliation than a physical scrub when used appropriately.

Night Treatment
❌ Pilgrim Retinol Night Cream: Retinol can cause dryness, peeling and irritation, especially when the skin barrier is compromised.
✅ Truderma Night Repair Serum: A gentler night-time option focused on hydration and skin repair.

Day vs Night: Which Skincare Ingredients to Use When?🧴

Here’s a simple guide to help you understand which ingredients work best in your morning and nighttime routine⬇️:

🧴 AHA/BHA: 🌙 Night
Exfoliate dead skin cells and may increase skin sensitivity, so nighttime application is preferred.

🧴 Vitamin C: ☀️ Morning | 🌙 Night
Provides antioxidant protection and can be used in both routines.

🧴 Peptides: ☀️ Morning | 🌙 Night
Support skin repair and can be used in both routines.

🧴 Ceramides: ☀️ Morning | 🌙 Night
Support the skin barrier and help prevent moisture loss.

🧴 Glycolic Acid: 🌙 Night
An exfoliating acid that can increase skin sensitivity, making nighttime use preferable.

🧴 Azelaic Acid: 🌙 Night
Helps with acne, redness and pigmentation and can be used as part of a nighttime routine.

🧴 Sunscreen: ☀️ Morning | ☀️ Afternoon
Protects against UV damage and should be reapplied during the day.

🧴 Retinol: 🌙 Night
Can make skin more sensitive to sunlight, so it is best used at night.

🧴 Niacinamide: ☀️ Morning
Helps control oil, strengthen the skin barrier and reduce redness.

🧴 Tranexamic Acid: ☀️ Morning | 🌙 Night
Helps reduce pigmentation and can be used in both AM and PM routines.

🧴 Hyaluronic Acid: ☀️ Morning | 🌙 Night
Hydrates the skin and helps maintain moisture throughout the day and night.

Retinol or Retinal? 🤔 They may sound similar, but choosing the right one can make a big difference for your skin.

Here’s a simple way to remember it:
✨ Retinol is a great choice if you have sensitive, dry, or easily irritated skin.
⚡ Retinal works faster and is often better suited for oily or acne-prone skin.

The good news? Both can help improve fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin texture when used consistently.

Whichever you choose:
🌙 Use it only at night
🤏 A pea-sized amount is enough
🧴 Always follow with a moisturizer and wear sunscreen the next morning.

Not sure which one is right for your skin? Instead of following trends, choose what's right for your skin. Consult a dermatologist for expert recommendations.

One of the most common concerns I see as a dermatologist in people over 50 is a visible scalp due to thinning hair at the crown.

As hair density reduces, the scalp becomes more noticeable, making the hair look sparse. While ageing is a contributing factor, genetics, hormonal changes, nutritional deficiencies, stress, and certain medical conditions can also accelerate this process.

The earlier the cause is identified, the better the chances of slowing further hair loss and maintaining healthy hair.

If you’ve started noticing more scalp than hair, it’s time to get it evaluated.
