The BENEFITS of vitamin C may include the following.

Wound healing
Vitamin C helps the body produce collagen and is present in skin, muscle, and other tissues.

People with a low intake of vitamin C may experience slower wound healing, as their bodies will be less able to produce collagen.

During times of recovery, healthcare professionals may recommendTrusted Source supplements for people with low vitamin C levels.

Cardiovascular health
Vitamin C may benefitTrusted Source cardiovascular health for several reasons. Studies have suggested that it may:

have antioxidant properties
help widen the blood vessels
improve nitric oxide production
help reduce plaque instability in atherosclerosis
This could help protect against heart disease and hypertension, or high blood pressure.

However, there is not enough evidenceTrusted Source to suggest that taking supplements will help protect heart health.

WHY WE NEED VITAMIN C

Vitamin C is water soluble, and the body does not store it. To maintain adequate levels of vitamin C, people need to consume food that contains it every day.

The body needs vitamin C for various functions. Here are some of them:

It helps the body produce collagen, L-carnitine, and some neurotransmitters.
As an antioxidant, it helps remove unwanted substances known as reactive oxidative species (ROS) from the body.
It helps the body absorb iron.
It boosts the immune system.
It enhances wound healing.
ROS are substances such as free radicals that result from natural bodily processes, exposure to pollution, and other factors. They can lead to oxidative stress, which can, in turn, cause cell damage.

Vitamin C’s antioxidant activity may help reduce inflammation and lower the risk of developing various conditions, including some cancers.

The body needs vitamin C to produce collagen. This is the main component of connective tissue and makes up 1–2% of muscle tissue.

Collagen is a vital component in fibrous tissues such as:

tendons
ligaments
skin
the cornea
cartilage
bones
the gut
blood vessels
Low levels of vitamin C in the body can lead to scurvy. Symptoms of scurvy include swollen joints, bleeding gums and loose teeth, anemia, and tiredness.

Vitamin B5 has many important functions. These include:

converting food into glucose
synthesizing cholesterol
forming s*x and stress-related hormones
forming red blood cells
As with all B vitamins, pantothenic acid helps the body break down fats, carbohydrates, and proteins so that our bodies can use them for energy and rebuilding tissues, muscles, and organs.

Deficiency
Vitamin B5 deficiency is extremely rare in people as pantothenic acid is found in nearly all foods. A healthy and varied diet should provide a person with enough.

Clinical trials have shown, however, that a deficiency may lead to:

tiredness
apathy
depression
irritability
sleep disorders
stomach pains
nausea
vomiting
numbness
muscle cramps
hypoglycemia
burning feet
upper respiratory infections
A deficiency of B5 can cause an increased sensitivity to insulin.

In mice, a vitamin B5 deficiency led to skin irritation and graying of the fur, but this was reversed when pantothenic acid was given.

However, according to Oregon State University,

“In humans, there is no evidence that taking pantothenic acid as supplements or using shampoos containing pantothenic acid can prevent or restore hair color.”

Jane Higdon, Ph.D., Linus Pauling Institute, Oregon State University

VITAMIN B5

Vitamin B5 is a water-soluble vitamin from the B group of vitamins. It helps produce energy by breaking down fats and carbohydrates. It also promotes healthy skin, hair, eyes, and liver.

People need B5 to synthesize and metabolize fats, proteins, and coenzyme A.

B5 is one of the less known vitamins, possibly because deficiencies of it are rare.

Vitamin B5 is also known as pantothenic acid, or Pantothenate. The word pantothenic comes from the Greek “pantou,” meaning everywhere. Nearly all foods contain small quantities of pantothenic acid.

VITAMIN B-3, or NIACIN

Vitamin B-3, also known as niacin, is one of eight B vitamins. It plays a role in converting the food we eat into energy. It helps the body to use proteins and fats, and it keeps the skin, hair, and nervous system healthy.

Other possible benefits of vitamin B-3 stem from its potential cholesterol-loweringTrusted Source, antioxidative, and anti-inflammatory properties.

Other names for vitamin B-3 include nicotinamide, nicotinic acid, and vitamin PP, because it prevents pellagra.

The body excretes any niacin it does not need in urine. The body does not store niacin, and so people must consume it in food every day.

A healthful diet can provide all of a person’s vitamin B-3 needs. Vitamin B-3 deficiency is rare in the United States.

lacks vitamin B-3 may experience:
a pigmented rash on skin that is exposed to the sun
rough appearance to the skin
bright red tongue
fatigue or apathy
vomiting, constipation, and diarrhea
circulatory problems
depression
headache
memory loss
in severe cases, hallucinations
A severe lack of vitamin B-3 can result in pellagra. The condition can be fatal.

Food sources
The following foods are good sourcesTrusted Source of vitamin B-3:

Beef liver: A 3-ounce portion contains 14.9 mg or 75 percent of a person’s daily value (DV)
Grilled chicken breast: A 3-ounce portion contains 10.3 mg or 52 percent of DV
Turkey breast: A 3-ounce portion has 10.0 mg or 50 percent of DV
Sockeye salmon: A 3-ounce piece contains 8.6 mg or 43 percent of DV
Cooked brown rice: One cup provides 5.2 mg or 26 percent of DV
Enriched breakfast cereal: One serving contains 5.0 mg or 25 percent of DV
Dry roasted peanuts: One ounce of these nuts contains 4.2 mg or 21 percent of DV
Foods that are high in tryptophan are good sources of niacin. The body needs tryptophan to make protein, but if there is extra, it can convert it to niacin.

BENEFITS OF VITAMIN B1
Vitamin B1, or thiamin, helps prevent complications in the nervous system, brain, muscles, heart, stomach, and intestines. It is also involved in the flow of electrolytes into and out of muscle and nerve cells.

It helps prevent diseases such as beriberi, which involves disorders of the heart, nerves, and digestive system.

Other conditions in which thiamin supplements may help include:
AIDS
canker sores
cataracts
glaucoma and other vision problems
cerebellar syndrome, a type of brain damage
cervical cancer
diabetic pain
stress
heart disease
kidney disease in patients with diabetes type 2
motion sickness
a weakened immune system.

DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMS
A deficiency of vitamin B1 commonly leads to beriberi, a condition that features problems with the peripheral nerves and wasting.

Weight loss and anorexia can develop.

There may be mental problems, including confusion and short-term memory loss.

Muscles may become weak, and cardiovascular symptoms can occur, for example, an enlarged heart.

Meat, fish, and grains are a good source of Vitamin B1
