The 6 shatkarmas are the yogic cleansing techniques in Hatha Yoga designed to purify the body and prepare it for meditation and other advanced practices. They are: Neti (nasal cleansing), Dhauti (digestive tract cleansing), Nauli (abdominal massage), Basti (colon cleansing), Kapalbhati (frontal brain cleansing), and Trataka (concentrated gazing).
Here is a brief overview of each Shatkarma:
Neti:
Cleanses the nasal passages, often using salt water (Jala Neti) or a soft thread (Sutra Neti).
Dhauti:
Cleanses the digestive tract, which can involve practices like Vamana Dhauti (induced vomiting with saltwater) or Vastra Dhauti (swallowing and removing a cloth strip).
Nauli:
A self-administered abdominal massage that involves contracting and rotating the abdominal muscles to stimulate and strengthen internal organs and improve digestion.
Basti:
A yogic e***a for cleansing the large intestine, also known as a colon cleanse.
Kapalbhati:
A powerful breathing technique with passive inhalation and active, forceful exhalation to cleanse the respiratory system and stimulate the frontal brain.
Trataka:
Involves staring at a single point or a candle flame until the eyes water to develop concentration and strengthen the eyes.
