This is called Abrasion. It is not something you need to be scared about, but you definitely need to treat this. Abrasion of the teeth is usually caused due to mechanical wear of the teeth from the external surface.

What can cause abrasion?

• Over zealous brushing with a hard bristled tooth brush • Abrasive/hard particled toothpaste

What does the abraded surface look and feel like?

The surface of the tooth is usually a bit darker on color for to wearing away if the overlying enamel and also tends to be sensitive due to dentinal exposure

How important is treating abrasion??

• As dentin is softer than enamel, once exposed to oral bacteria it can start getting decayed and often leading to cavities.

You may be advised a flouride application to prevent the tooth from decay or either cover the abraded surface with a tooth colored filling material or a veneer depending on how much of the surface has been worn away.

Changing your toothbrush to one having soft bristles and also using a toothpaste high in calcium and flouride content can reduce the amount of abrasion.

Adopting a correct brushing technique with a good toothpaste is the best way to prevent abrasion!
