Hair porosity is a strand's ability to absorb and retain moisture. Hair has pores similar to skin, and highly porous hair has "open" pores.
Low porosity
Has tightly bound cuticles that resist moisture absorption. Low porosity hair floats to the top of a glass of water for a while before sinking.
Medium porosity
Has less tightly bound cuticles that absorb and retain the right amount of moisture. Medium porosity hair floats somewhere near the middle of a glass of water.
High porosity
Has more widely spaced cuticles that attract moisture quickly but lose it fast. High porosity hair sinks to the bottom of a glass of water fairly quickly.
Hair porosity can influence which products you use and how you use them. For example, low porosity hair has a lot of keratin or protein, so it generally doesn't go well with protein-based products.
