Perimenopause, the *transitional phase* leading to menopause, can bring about various physical and emotional changes in a woman's life. While individual experiences may vary, here are five general tips to help navigate this stage:
*Stay Hydrated:*
Hormonal changes during perimenopause can sometimes lead to an increase in hot flashes and night sweats. Staying well-hydrated can help manage these symptoms. Aim for at least *eight glasses of water* per day and consider reducing caffeine and alcohol intake, as they can contribute to dehydration and disrupt sleep.
*Stay Active:*
Regular exercise can help alleviate symptoms associated with perimenopause, such as mood swings, weight gain, and sleep disturbances. Engage in activities you enjoy, whether it's *walking, yoga, swimming, or strength training* . Exercise also _promotes bone health_ and can help manage stress.
*Maintain a Balanced Diet:*
*Focus* on a well-balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Adequate intake of _calcium_ and _vitamin D_ is essential for maintaining bone health during perimenopause. Additionally, omega-3 fatty acids found in fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts may help manage mood swings and support heart health.
*Prioritize Sleep:*
Hormonal fluctuations can disrupt sleep patterns during perimenopause. Establish a consistent sleep routine, create a comfortable sleep environment, and consider relaxation techniques to promote restful sleep.
*Regular Health Check-ups:*
Schedule regular check-ups with your healthcare provider to monitor your overall health and discuss any concerns or symptoms you may be experiencing. It's essential to keep up with preventive screenings, such as mammograms and bone density tests, to catch and address any potential health issues early on.

*Menstruation* is a natural biological process that occurs in females of reproductive age. It involves the monthly shedding of the uterine lining in the absence of pregnancy. The menstrual cycle is regulated by hormonal changes that prepare the body for potential pregnancy.
*Menstrual Phase (Days 1–5):* This phase marks the actual menstruation or the shedding of the uterine lining. During this time, women experience bleeding, which usually lasts around 3 to 7 days. The level of hormones, including oestrogen and progesterone, is low during this phase.
*Proliferative/Follicular Phase (Days 1–13):* This phase begins on the first day of menstruation and lasts until ovulation. The pituitary gland releases follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), stimulating the development of several ovarian follicles. Each follicle contains an immature egg. As these follicles grow, they produce oestrogen, which helps thicken the uterine lining.
*Ovulation (around Day 14):* Ovulation is the release of a mature egg (o**m) from one of the ovarian follicles. This usually occurs around the middle of the menstrual cycle. Ovulation is triggered by a surge in luteinizing hormone (LH), which is preceded by an increase in estrogen levels.
*Secretory/Luteal Phase (Days 15–28):* Following ovulation, the ruptured follicle transforms into a structure called the corpus luteum, which produces progesterone. Progesterone helps prepare the uterine lining for a potential pregnancy by making it thicker and more supportive. If fertilisation and implantation of a fertilised egg do not occur, the corpus luteum degenerates, leading to a decrease in progesterone levels. This drop in hormones triggers the start of menstruation and the beginning of a new cycle.
These phases collectively make up the menstrual cycle, which typically lasts around *28 days*, although it can vary from person to person.
*If you have any concerns about your menstrual cycle, *DM* to book your consultation with our experts and avail yourself of the best treatment before it's too late!*
